. 125 Best Vegetarian Slow Cooker Recipes
City Travel Guides > Books > Food and Drink
by: Judith Finlayson
September 09, 2004
Almost every slow cooker recipe I've ever made has been tomato-based. Recipe books are full of slow-cook meat recipes and stews, but I was bored already, after just a few months of owning my slow cooker.
So I had high hopes for this recipe book and I have to say it has exceeded my expectations.
Firstly, the recipes actually are vegetarian (many of them are vegan). I say this because other slow cooker recipe books have "vegetarian" sections which are packed with meat stock, chicken soup, fish sauce and bacon in the ingredients!
Secondly, the recipes are easy and they work. Again, despite being pretty experienced in the kitchen, I've had the experience of embarrassing failures with other slow cooker recipe ... Read More:

. The Student Cookbook (Cookery)
City Travel Guides > Books > Food and Drink
from: Hamlyn
June 15, 2004
I am a new student and was bought this book as a gift, although it is a very good recipe book with simple, easy-to-follow instructions and a wonderful cocktail section (!) I wouldnt really suggest it as the best book for students? I say this because of the ingrediants list, it contains things such as 'small handful of fresh parsley, chopped', '1/2 teaspoon tumeric', 'cumin seeds' and 'dried mixed herbs' which in my experience arent normally items found in a students cupboard? My mother makes a lovely shepherds pie without using parsley or oregano (and I didnt even know what passata was!) and in my opinion a simpler ingrediants list would make this recipe much more accessible to students!

. Lunchboxes
City Travel Guides > Books > Food and Drink
by: Annabel Karmel
August 14, 2003
I am a huge Annabel Karmel fan and I buy all of her books. I did enjoy this one, although I don't use the recipes for lunchboxes as my children wouldn't eat the suggestions for sandwiches, etc. They got teased by their friends for bringing "healthy" food to school, which was a real shame! They do like the items from the "sweet" section, though! I recommend this book to anyone who needs a bit of inspiration for making packed lunches as it is crammed full of delicious and mouthwatering recipes!

. The Hairy Bikers Ride Again
City Travel Guides > Books > Food and Drink
by: Si King, Dave Myers
April 12, 2007
I try to cook and look for new ideas in newspapers and books. Sadly, it seems to me that most writing on food isn't about food at all. It's a statement of a lifestyle that we are expected to aspire to, nothing more. The food they describe looks more at home in an art gallery than on a plate and is accompanied by such pretentious nonsense as to make my stomach turn. These lads clearly love their food and their sheer enthusiasm comes over brightly in this excellent book. I recommend it very highly!

. First Steps in Winemaking
City Travel Guides > Books > Food and Drink
by: C.J.J. Berry
December 31, 2002
C J J Berry was a master on winemaking. I have bought and read most books on winemaking. This is the one I always turn back to. If you have to buy one book on homewinemaking this is the one! He begins my explaining the concepts and techniques of winemaking in easy to understand terms. He also explains the science behind the process but he is never confusing or condescending. I have never come across a problems which has not been solved by his troubleshooting section and his procedures are comprehensive but easy to follow. The remainder of the book takes you through a wine making year with suggestions, recipies and leaves you confident enough to experiment successfully. All recipes are in metric, imperial and US measures. He leaves you feeling that country ... Read More:
