I purchased a dual rice cooker/slow cooker, mainly for the rice bit, but on looking for recipes suitable for a slow cooker I plumped for this book for starters. Unfortunately this book is just an updated version of an old book first published around 30 years ago, so the recipes are a bit "living in the 70s" (beef bourguignon anyone?). Slow cooking seems to be undergoing a bit of a revival, but we really need some new recipe books with more sophisticated recipes and flavours for more modern tastes.

I write as a cook who enjoys actually reading cookery books, not just cooking from them.
In comparision with Tessa's other books this one has turned out to be less enjoyable. The publishers should take note: The simple fact that the ingredients are not arranged vertically makes it more difficult to grasp the recipe as a whole, it's not as amusing when just flicking through the book for inspiration!
I don't know why but it does give the impression that Tessa hurried through Portugal just to write this book, there's no soul to it if one could say that.
That said, the book as a whole is beautifully published, the photographs amazing and I have tried Pasteis de Nata, very good!

There is a wealth of information in this chunky little book. I only gaive it three stars because I feel there are rather too many ready-made, branded foods listed because the label on such items would give all the information, anyway, so no need to look them up in a reference book.

Everything I eat I have created myself so I need calorie values of ingredients, not finished items. So I found I had to wade through ready-made, canned, etc before I find what I am looking for.

But for someone who has little idea of caorie values or needs a fuller list this would be a good little reference book to keep in the kitchen.

I bought this for a friend of mine and she loved it. She's always been a fan of courgettes, but before the only way she could make them more exciting was by adding paprika. Now, she can do something new every day and they're all delicious. The variety is great as well. There is something for everyone and every occasion. There's really quick and easy stuff and stuff for dinner parties. A must for everyone's kitchen, it even outdoes Delia.

I have read this book from cover to cover, brilliant, what a delight Ian Garten is, not only to read her books but to watch her programmes, she is an inspiration. I have just ordered the last book and will have a complete set by tomorrow. I am as happy as when I am eating Orange Pound Cake!

Famous for Spanish- and North African-style food, the couple have gone East - literally and metaphorically. A few years ago they `acquired' an allotment in London's East End and found, amongst fellow growers, Turks, Greeks and Cypriots. The two Sams swiftly became part of the allotment community even if there's little detail of any actual digging in the book. Rather it marks the passage of the seasons and the breadth of the crops with rich and alluring recipes - some their own, others weeded from neighbours.

It is well known that in my eyes Nigella can do no wrong - until this book.

I have bought every single one of her books and watched every series on TV, but this was just so wide of the mark.

Thankfully she has bounced back to her usual sparkling form and calm has been restored in her books and TV series.

I would recommend that you buy this book ONLY based on watching the series not because you assume as its Nigella it will be fabulous.

As a complete novice to breadmaking, I was stunned by this tour de force. I had not realised that we are eating such rubbish in the average sliced pan. This book shows how ordinary mortals can bake delicious and nutritious bread from two ingredients (flour and water) using time as the third ingredient. Along the way, the author decries the state of modern UK bread - soft gooey pap which reflects the sickening influences of the nanny state and big business. I have followed the recipes and produced bread which is consistently devoured by my three kids. They take three slices each into school for lunch every day and are mobbed by their friends for 'a taste'. My book arrived today and I have to tell you that I dropped everything
to spend a couple of hours reading it.

It is quite simply the best cook book I have ever seen, and I have quite
a few from Larousse through Gordon Ramsay to Elizabeth David. The
photos are beautifully composed and presented, and the writing is
clearly from the heart, but the way it actually shows the reader how to
achieve things is excellent.

My favourite book before this was Conran's cookbook because it devoted
a third of the book to choosing the right produce and demonstrating
preparation techniques, but this book is well ahead of that one.
