I have just returned froma trip to this region with this volume constantly at hand, and found it almost always invaluable. The practical information about things like hotels and restaurants is reliable, but there are many new hotels going up in Syria and even more in Jordan, so a new edition will be needed soon to cater for this. The descriptions of towns and villages are always concise and clear, and the historical accounts of the three countries and their regions are based on sound scholarly works. Firstly, for a budget traveller travelling alone, the accomodation listings were woefully inadequate. Many places with dorm beds were either not listed or the fact they had dorms not mentioned. In fact I frequently found the need to ask fellow travellers if I could borrow their Lonely Planet so I could actually find where the good places to stay were. Later I also found myself borrowing Lonely Planets to get a better description of some of the sites I visited. McLachlan September 26, 2003 I only travelled to Morocco for a week to Fes and Marrakech, using the Footprint and Lonely Planet Guides. The Lonely Planet is obviously targetted at bugdet travellers while Footprint caters for those with more to spend. If you like a comfortable hotel then use the Footprint. Having said that, I turned quickly to the internet and Expedia, etc as it's much quicker, informative and upto date, and cybercafes are everywhere now. Similarily, for those with past their packpacker days, seeking decent restaurants, bars and clubs, the Footprint guide is the better choice. Although occasionally only giving a phone number to find these venues could make things difficult. The maps in the Footprint guide are OK but Lonely Planet's ... If focuses on cultural things like history, architecture and sights rather than practical things like hotels and restaurants (but it does have some suggestions).
