In preparing for a 2 month trip to New Zealand, we looked at all the main contenders. Aside from being interesting, accurate and reliable, Footprint was also the only one that was consistently readable and amusing, quite a feat for a guidebook. Very strong too on the wildlife side of NZ, which was important to us. Definitely the best of the bunch for NZ.

What this book totally fails to mention is that Bologna totally shuts down for most of August!

Most shops, many bars and some resturants all have signs on locked shutters explainig that the owners (it seems that most of the businesses are family run) have departed, en mass, for their annual holiday.

Bigger tourist attractions such as the excellent tower are still open but many of the shops mentioned in the book are shut up until late August / early September.

The city is still very nice, albeit quite, during this period and you should be able to find nice resturants but don't expect to do much in the way of shopping.

I hate to write a bad review about a Footprint book because I have used them in the past and thought they were great, but I feel that they have lost their way a bit with this guide to Argentina. I am just back from a trip and found the guide out of date and it seemed to be aimed at the 'older' traveller. Also, the writer obviously has a huge amount of experience and love for Argentina, but I felt that sometimes that coloured the judgment of things to see/do in the guide. A guide should, in my opinion, give an unbiased viewpoint 'warts and all' and I felt that this was absent from the Footprint guide. This guide may give you bus details etc, but I would definitely go for the Time Out guides, where possible, in preference to Footprint in the future, ... Read More:

Always hard to review a guide book without going into specific details, but as I bought it with a specific trip in mind, it more than suited my purpose. Trekking information wise, it didn't cover the area of the High Atlas that I was visiting, so a seperate book was needed, but Footprint always come up trumps with up to date information & detailed history & culture sections. Very adequate for Marrakesh, but would advise anyone trekking to buy specific trekking guides (also available from Amazon!).
