. Incest and Morris Dancing: A Gastronomic Revolution
City Travel Guides > Books > Gastronomy
by: Jonathan Meades
April 15, 2002
This collection of restaurant reviews makes some of the best reading I have encountered in some years. Meades is perhaps best known for his acerbic column in the Times newspaper in which he delights readers in explaining the virtues (or otherwise) of some of the places in which he has eaten. His sheer depth of knowledge of food and cooking alone deserves merit, but this collection is full of many treasures ranging from buildings to counties, hotels to booze. Meades is often a witty commentator, but some of the best pieces in this book are simply riotously funny. The piece in which he describes his visit to a 'Harvester' is worth the cover price alone and is one of the funniest pieces I have ever read. I defy anyone who cares about food and ... Read More:

. Paris on a Plate: A Gastronomic Diary
City Travel Guides > Books > Gastronomy
by: Stephen Downes
November 01, 2006
I moved to Paris in January 2007 from Cobham, just south of London. English food has undergone a revolution as far as I'm concerned. When I first lived in England for a year 20 years ago, (in the meantime lived in Holland and Germany) all you could get in a restaurant was instant coffee. Now I find that almost anywhere you drop into a resataurant or gastro pub, you can get a good meal and freshly brewed coffee - in some cases over priced, but for the most part a good meal. No so in the museaum city of Paris! Lots of mediocre and over-priced food, catered to tourists.
I bought this book out of boredom - my French is not very good... so I was loking for anything in English.
I loved it, and everything Downes said was spot ... Read More:

. Best Food Writing
City Travel Guides > Books > Gastronomy
from: Marlowe & Co
November 23, 2007
This is my favorite volume of the Best of Food Writing series so far (early 2004). It introduced me to Ruth Reichl and Anthony Bourdain, whose books I might not have discovered if I had not read their excerpts here first. By collecting material from a variety of sources (books, magazines, webzines, newspapers), Hughes has given us access to more, and better, food writing than we would have hunted down ourselves. The result is fabulous. I was so impressed with Laura Fraser's piece on why she stopped being a vegetarian, reprinted from Salon.com. The topic is unexpected, the writing seems effortless, and she really made me think about the subject in a different way. Then I had to find what else she had written and was captivated by ...
