. French Phrasebook (Collins GEM)
City Travel Guides > Books > General
from: Collins
March 05, 2007
I'll start by saying I think I expected a bit too much of this product. I attempted to use it in France after using the Michel Thomas Foundation Course: French (Michel Thomas Series) (which incidentally is very good). But I found that because I knew a little French already, everything I needed to know was too advanced for this book. The dictionary was a lot more use.
On the other hand, if you don't speak even a word of French this might be useful to you. it has phonetic pronunciations of all the words and useful sections which might get you out of a scrape. But if you can afford it... forget this and go for the French course instead!

. The Rough Guide to Kerala
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: David Abram
October 25, 2007
OK, I love Rough Guides and always have done. But even allowing for this obvious bias this really is a superb book.
All of the usual information is there; the best places to see & do; how to get around by public & private transport; maps of major towns/cities; a v useful guide to (delicious) Keralan food & drink; local customs etc. You would expect this from a guide book, of course, but Rough Guides does this better than anyone else, and 'Kerala' is no exception.
The excellent 'Contexts' section, which fills in the history of this unique, fascinating, beautiful Indian state; and the feature 'text boxes' of a particular aspect of Keralan culture allow for a good understanding of the state, essential when you've ... Read More:

. Marrakesh (Lonely Planet Encounter)
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Alison Bing
March 01, 2008
Forget the tourist uniform of backpack and Lonely Planet/Rough Guide in hand.... you're going to need both hands to carry all the 'bargains' that the salesmen of Marrakech have so considerately helped you spend your money on!
This is a tremendous little guidebook to carry in your pocket as you wander round Marrakech.
The old Medina is a rabbit-warren of alleyways (you WILL get lost, so enjoy the experience!), so to have a well thought out little book like this on you is a real help. It is just the right size (and weight!) to slip into the leg pocket of your combat trousers or back pocket of your jeans, and has just enough practical information about sights of interest, shopping, restaurants etc etc, to keep you busy. I found that ... Read More:

. Danny Wallace and the Centre of the Universe (Quick Reads)

No, really, don't!
I read it yesterday during my breaks on a course I was on, but, unfortunately, did not realize for some time that the other people in the room, all strangers, were giving me some very odd looks and edging away because, totally engrossed and loving another Leader Classic I was laughing out loud, often, and loudly. Oh dear.
However, those warnings in mind, I would absolutely recommend this one. It's very short but very, very funny. Trust me. It is.

. As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Laurie Lee
May 31, 1973
Widely regarded as one of the greatest examples of travel writing ever made, 'As I walked out one midsummer morning' is a massively engaging book.
At once visceral, heartfelt, honest, bursting with humanity and in some part disturbing, this account of a young man's walk through the Spain of the 1930s is a vicarious experience that transports the reader into an unforgettable but lost world.
There are occasions when Lee seems to have arrived at truly momentous turning points. After crossing the Guadarrama peaks he first sees Madrid in the plain of La Mancha and his knowledge of Spain is to become transformed by his experience of the capital. And then later, when he meets a Spanish sailor who portentiously warns "I don't know who you are, but if ... Read More:

. The London Encyclopedia
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Christopher Hibbert, Ben Weinreb, John Keay, Julia Keay
August 15, 2008
The old 'Weinreb' was the best single-volume reference book on London, despite a few minor but still niggling errors. Happily most of these have been pulled out, the book's been expanded with more entries and even better illustration, and I had no hesitation whatever in grabbing a copy as soon as it went on sale. There's nothing to touch it, frankly: magnificent, endlessly fascinating, and outstanding value even before the discount. My 'Desert Island Discs' read, as indeed it's been for the last 25 years.

. Paris (Eyewitness Travel Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Alan Tillier
February 01, 2008
If time is tight, or you just like to arrive at a holiday destination very well prepared, a guidebook is a valuable and important investment. So choosing the right one is crucial.
Whilst I suspect that "Time Out" and "Lonely Planet" books probably sell in greater volume, having looked through them both I'm extremely glad I opted instead to use this Eyewitness Travel Guide for my recent trip to Paris. It helped me make the most of my trip.
As with most guidebooks this breaks down Paris into a series of districts - but then very clearly labels the key attractions, how to find them and even proposes short walks that will enable you to get the most out of your time in that area.
Accepting that flicking between pages ... Read More:
