. The Call of the Weird: Travels in American Subcultures
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Louis Theroux
July 07, 2006
There are some great features to Amazon: competitive prices, the chance to browse for a vast selection of books at any hour of the day, generally good service. Here is a bad thing: judging a book by its cover (or the reputation of the author). I bought this because I have enjoyed some of Theroux's TV programmes and it sounded a bit different.
Theroux's plan is to revisit subjects he had met during the making of a TV series on weird Americans and see how they have changed in the intervening few years. The problem is that it doesn't quite work and I think Theroux realises that quite quickly. The writing is engaging and honest but it's partly a story of tracking the people down and partly a story about what they said when he found ... Read More:

. Cuba (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Brendan Sainsbury
November 01, 2006
For my first trip to Cuba, this book was pretty accurate, up to date and informative in terms of places to visit, tourist attractions, what to do and where to go. It gives you useful advice on how much you are expected to tip, what to expect of the country and how to get around and where to go which was very useful. The only negative aspect of this book was probably the design layout. It covers a vast majority of aspects of Cuba which can be a lot to get through, the layout is quite difficult to read and its mostly black and white columns of writing do not make it appealing. As it is written from first hand experience it is definitely a very useful book for first time traveller's however a lot of the entertainment they had suggested for Havana, no ... Read More:

. Round Ireland with a Fridge
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Tony Hawks
May 01, 1999
A travelogue with a difference, or at least a fridge.
Or 'My self absorbed travels around various pubs in Ireland whilst trying to get my leg over'.
Hawks shows virtually no interest in the country he is visiting (he leaves the 'deeply spiritual' place he feels 'honoured' to be visiting to go to the pub (surprise) to watch a football match. (The photo's included in the book are of the fridge, cars and pubs, there is 1 - yes one, photo of some scenery)
His attitude is 'me, me, me' all the the way throuh, which to be honest might not be so bad if Hawks were a pleasant companion but unfortuantley he comes accross as an uninformed, patronising, buffoon. His 'jokes' are painfull (especially towards the end of the ... Read More:

. Narrow Dog to Indian River
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Terry Darlington
April 07, 2008
I really enjoyed the previous book, Narrow dog to Carcassone, which I read on holiday last year. I waited with bated breath, and eager anticipation for this follow up journey, which was mentioned on the last few pages. - Have just read the first two chapters, hence only three stars up to now, and so far the American adventure has not yet begun, but Terry has a "turn of phrase" that makes me chuckle out loud. Monica, his long suffering wife, is an excellent "straight woman" for Terry and his "daftness". Monica is the heroine of both tales and Jim the whippet offer the light releif. Must get back to the book now.

. Long Way Down
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman
June 02, 2008
Long Way Down tells the tale of the second journey made by the two crazy guys. Their aim: to travel on motorcycles all the way from John O'Groats... but not to Land's End. Cape Town, no less! Along the way they arranged to make stop-offs with three different charities that they're involved with, in order to raise awareness and therefore hopefully more cash for these good causes. Because of this, the book was a real mixture of tension (bike problems, falling off, scary roads, border problems etc), fun (when everything is going right, and the guys are happy on the open road) and emotion (charity visits). It all made for an enjoyable and informative read. For a non-fiction title, there was a great deal of description of many of the places the guys visited, ... Read More:

. Vietnam (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Nick Ray
August 01, 2007
What is it about Lonely Planet? Like a rash, their guides are everywhere - sometimes in the most unwelcome of places. Nicely packaged and handy they may be, but they are often woefully inaccurate and incomplete. This is no exception. Cutting and pasting a few paragraphs about history and culture, this really skims the surface of a fascinating country, and leaves many fascinating places out. If you're a twentysomething Australian back-packer, then this book will probably make you very happy; if you're more discerning, and looking to explore the country's lesser known areas and learn more about its culture (and if you're interested in accuracy), then I would go for the infinitely better Rough Guide.
