I must be honest and say that I started this book in tandem with another just because I didn't think I'd be terribly interested in the subject matter, much as I love Bryson. By the end of the second chapter, I wanted to book a ticket on the next flight to Perth. The flora, fauna and folks that inhabit this wondrous country intrigue me strangely.
Bill Bryson is one of the funniest writers I have ever encountered. I find myself reading bits aloud at the slightest hint of encouragement. I challenge anyone to read his discussion of running through a park trying to get away from some scary dogs, and ending up in an unsuspecting housewife's back garden, without laughing out loud. If you can get through that section without giggling, you ... Read More:

. Travels with Herodotus

This book is a very informative, enlightening and interesting read.
This book is a pleasure to read. It is easy to follow the author as he travels around the world. He starts explaining briefly about his background in Poland and his desire to `cross the border' and how, as a consequence, he finds himself being sent to India.
Perhaps one of the main attractive qualities of the author is that he is honest; he doesn't say he likes or even enjoys all of the places he travels to. For example, taking his first long-haul trip to India, the reader gets the impression that he really entered at the deep end and found it quite tough.
Later in the book he goes on to discuss in more detail the reasons why people travel and ... Read More:

. The Wild Places
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Robert Macfarlane
September 03, 2007
When I started this book it seemed to be beautiful, imaginative and intelligent. Unfortunately it became rather repetitive and irritating. The additional material - literary and historical was mainly interesting but then he talked about some rather odd folk who devoted a lifetime to wave patterns and sand dunes!!
I also began to dread him being near water because I knew he was going to strip off and jump in - not necessarily for a swim - on his winter night in Cumbria he got in and sat in the freezing water gasping up to his neck - why?????
I began to wonder what was the point of the book. It seemed to be trying to be something it wasn't, especially when compared with Mountains of the Mind which was excellent. I suspect it was the influence of Roger Deakin ... Read More:

. The Bookseller of Kabul
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Asne Seierstad
March 04, 2004
This was the 4th book I had read about Afghanistan, after The Swallows of Kabul and Khaled Hosseini's two classic bestsellers. The difference is that this is a non-fiction book.
The author is a Norwegian journalist who lives with an Afghani family for a few months and observes their daily lives and interactions. The head of the household in which she resides is the owner of the bookstore. The book highlights the male dominated Afghani culture, and the author frequently relates her anger (and even disgust) at the inevitable but sad destinies of most women in Afghanistan. No matter how educated or ambitious, many are forced to settle for a role as housewife and essentially servant to the men of the house. Step out of line...and expect a beating.
A real insight into a culture ... Read More:
