. The Last Testament
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Sam Bourne
July 02, 2007
I read Sam Bourne's 'The Righteous Men' and then 'The Final Reckoning' and was captivated by both and had high expectations for 'The Last Testament' but sadly, these expectations were not met.
The plot was a little too predictable and was filled with some useless points to the plot - I won't give anything away. Let's say I wasn't as hooked as I have been with previous books of Bourne's. I'd rate this as the worst of his books... But if you need something to read on a plane/train or on a long car journey, I wouldn't disregard it completely.

. The Lovely Bones
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Alice Sebold
June 06, 2003
This was an easy read and held my attention long enough that it became a very fast one, too. I read, more or less, everything and anything, but The Lovely Bones wasn't one I was itching to read and probably wouldn't have been read at all if it hadn't been for all the hype and a bargain carboot buy. (Incidentally, you can tell which books are the result of media hype because of what you find at our local carboot. In my town, there is no book shop, but almost every box of books had a book by Dan Brown, Jody Picoult or Alice Sebold in.)
The story itself was OK, in a shrug, pull-a-face sort of way. I recommended it to my Mum, who loves these sorts of grim-reality books, and said she could keep it. So make what you will of that. At least, ... Read More:

. The Beach House

by: Jane Green
June 12, 2008
I want Nan as a friend! I wish she would adopt me. I thought she was the best female charactor I have read about in a long time. All the charactors were believable and I cared what happened to them all.
This is Jane Green's best book in a while, The Beach House is definately somewhere I would want to visit!
Get this book I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

. Gilead
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Marilynne Robinson
February 02, 2006
I've never submitted a book review to Amazon before, but I found this book to be so dull and disappointing that I felt I should. I read about three quarters of the book and, realising I was still none the wiser as to what it was meant to be about, I gave up - something I haven't done with any book for years. I constantly found myself having to re-read several pages at a time, as a result of my mind wandering onto any subject other than the book's content. How this won any sort of prize, I don't know.

. The Book With No Name

i bought this book based on the other reviews, and i cant help thinking the good reviews were written by friends of the author, it is truly a horrid overdramatic story with no proper direction, i found it boring beyond compare, do yourself a favour and dont buy it, its no wonder they had to try and sell it with such gimmicks as "everyone who reads it ends up dead", spend your money elsewhere, you will thank me for it!

. The Steel Remains (Gollancz S.F.)
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Richard Morgan
August 07, 2008
I'm a big fan of Richard Morgan's work. He has put out tremendous stories -- this isn't one of them. Most of what he wrote appeared to be an attempt to break from the nomral fantasy genre and put some shock value. However, along the way, he missed the fact that you need a strong story and I never really cared for any of the main characters. If you haven't purchase this yet, you should consider it based on the strength of his past success -- you might like it, I didn't. I'll wait until he goes back to the SciFi.

. The Siege of Krishnapur
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: J.G. Farrell
July 01, 1996
My interest in this book was piqued when it was nominated for the 'Booker of Bookers'. On reading it, I was not at all disappointed. It ticked every box I could hope for - excellent characterisation, well plotted storyline, free indirect discourse that Jane Austen would be proud of,and an enormous amount of wit. At times I was laughing out loud at the antics of the characters under pressure of the siege. A truly excellent novel that I thoroughly recommend.

. Touch the Dark
City Travel Guides > Books > General
by: Karen Chance
June 28, 2007
Deliciously gory and sexy. I liked the well-established supernatural world that Chance created and her exploration of ideas. The magic involved was unusual (in that I hadn't come across it quite like that in a novel before) and the plot was interesting enough to keep me reading until the end, though I don't think I would read it again. The story is a series of detailed, lengthy scenes that takes place over a fairly short space of time and I did find the sometimes slow pace of events irritating at times, but I would buy and read the sequel for more.
