The green Michelin guides are a classic reference, but I'm not an unconditional fan. This guide is more than 300-pages long and covers everything you might need to make your visit a success. I bought this guide not so much for the regions or famous cities, but for the occasional visit to places such as Hanover, Karlsruhe or Kiel. I lived in Germany for a while, and I speak a little German, and there are far better guides out there when visiting Berlin or Munich. So this guide is useful, but not more than that.

Yes it is in French, but assuming you can read French the Green Guides are the "standard", and their use of the language is pretty straightforward. Many are also available in English too.
They are well organised, contain useful information on all sorts of places from small hamlets to big cities, are accurate (or were at time of going to press I guess - prices/times change) with admission charges and opening times, and contain suggested sightseeing tours of various durations as well as descriptions of those sights. But they do tend to be a bit dry and contain almost no photos.
There are plenty of other guide books out there that contain fantastic photos together with lots of descriptive text, but little ... Read More:

The green Michelin guides are a classic reference, but I'm not an unconditional fan. This guide is over 200-pages long and covers everything you might need to make your visit a success. I bought this guide when visiting different places in Scotland, and it turned out to have just the right level of coverage and content when visiting places like Edinburgh for a few days. This is a useful guide for short visits.
