Bought this as a gift then got my own. Love Schott's Miscellanies and have his Sporting, as well as Original. All fabulous, quirky but more than encompassing! I love that he does the layout and specifies the fonts, you feel he is a real creator as well as a collector of useful (usually) or amusing facts, like a miniature Pears encyclopedia on steroids?! Get one get them all! Then subscribe for the annual Almanac! So this has everything you've wanted to know about food & drink and can be read cover to cover or simply dipped into. Essential information, about bottle sizes, seasons to eat things you can't get (here in Australia anyway) as well as, no doubt obscure answers to crossword puzzles are all there! A great book, part anecdotes, part recipes. I've lived in Auvergne for long & the book is a tribute to the people & their cuisine.
Do try the the recipes; they're the true ones.

I had been looking for a book for a while on ancient egyptian food, and I found this one. Its a lovely book, with fantastic images alongside. The recipes are simple, and easy to follow, and they even taste good. I can recommend this not only for cooks, but for followers of egyptology.

I wanted to like this book but couldn't get over the author's patronising tone whenever he dealt with the working class. He drops his aitches with a salacious glee. This could have been a smashing book but the impression given (at least with the first half dozen chapters) was of an up his own home counties foodie, having an awfully big adventure up in the grimy North, which he seems to believe is just about as far from civilization as a chap can get. This book has no heart at all.
