. Feast: Why Humans Share Food
City Travel Guides > Books > History of Food
by: Martin Jones
April 10, 2008
Martin Jones is a bioarchaeologist - he nearly invented the discipline. In "The Molecule Hunt" he not only explained that rather cumbersome term; he demonstrated what a fabulous array of information about our ancestors and us this new science has revealed. In this work, he utilises that data and enlarges the view to examine human societies in their environmental contexts. An insightful and comprehensive account, Jones explains the roots of our mealtime habits, along with the steps we passed through in reaching them.
He notes at the outset that humans are unique in gathering around a cooking fire or other central location and feeding together facing their fellows. For any other species, eye contact is a threat display. With us, it's ... Read More:

. The True History of Chocolate
City Travel Guides > Books > History of Food
by: Sophie D. Coe, Michael D. Coe
2003-05
After a flashy title and promising prologue, the book is not at all as scientific as the author pretends. It is too anti-spanish biased and often misses the point. It is not a book that gives a clear and cronologically correct picture of the real history of chocolate. It lacks many historical facts and fails to portrait how Cacao really got to Africa, Cortes' involvement in the early trade, it gives a very shallow picture of dirnking chocolate in Spain, makes some unbeliavable statements when it comes to etimology, etc. He spends too many lines developing his hatred against the spanish and also forgets about the portuguese and the industry they developed around cacao.
A waste of money and trees to make the paper it was printed on. ... Read More:

. History of Food
City Travel Guides > Books > History of Food

I usually avoid French Historians, just because their distinct style is not normally to my liking. This book was an exception, and I'll admit it surprised me. It is dense and anectotal, so I wouldn't recommend it for long reads, but if taken in small doses it's wonderful! She's very, very funny, which says a lot, because French writers usually don't make me chuckle. It took me a month to read it, and it was worth the time.

. Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol
City Travel Guides > Books > History of Food
by: Iain Gately
July 03, 2008
I read Gately's book on Tobacco a couple of years back and so when this new book appeared on the lists I immediately looked forward to reading it. It didn't disappoint - indeed, if anything, it is an even more interesting and polished affair than its predecessor. There is so much of interest in it: history, stories, and a huge amount of information and commentary are all expertly woven together and described in Gately's witty and intelligent style - which makes for enjoyable and easy reading. I'm going to send a couple of copies as Christmas presents - which I know will be well received - what better recommendation can I give you?
