. Terroir: The Role of Geology, Climate, and Culture in the Making of French Wines
City Travel Guides > Books > History of Food
by: James E. Wilson
February 01, 1999
Wilson's book on the connection between geology and wine is truly amazing. It serves just as good as a short course in geology as an in-depth guide to fine french wines. The book lets you understand the reasons for subtle differences in the character of wines that originate from what may seem as the same terroir. However, as my passion is Alsace, I have looked into details of this section. Unfortunatly, many maps are only "almost" correct; Grand Cru sites are mixed up or put in the wrong commune, rivers have been mixed up etc. Nevertheless, this is a piece of work that every serious french wine enthusiast must own, and read!

. Alice Waters & Chez Panisse: The Romantic, Impractical, Often Eccentric, Ultimately Brilliant Making of a Food Revolution
City Travel Guides > Books > History of Food

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I am very interested in Alice Waters' and Chez Panisse's philosophy about food. The author has done thorough research on the book, albeit some parts of the book seemed repetitive, perhaps owing to the repetitive occurences within the development of the restaurant itself. Overall, if you are interested in the restaurant business and in fresh food/slow food movement, read it!

What a fantastic book!
In the Devil's Garden is divided into eight sections (one for each of the seven deadly sins plus one for luck!)Part travelogue, part gourmet treat, part history book, this book ticks so many boxes you won't be disappointed.
The book is incredibly well researched and is written in a highly entertaining, often humourous way. There were parts where I was almost crying with laughter....the part where Allen was rubbed down with a guinea pig was particualrly amusing (if you want to know why, you'll have to read the book!) I particualrly liked the idea of Louis XIV's courtiers having a 'hissy fit' when chocolate was introduced to France. I can picture it really clearly!
A great book that ... Read More:
