I'm a fan of Lonely Planet guidebooks because, when it comes to the backpacker/individual traveller guides, I think they're the best you can get. They do have a lot of practical info and most of the stuff is accurate and helpful. However, I found that you have to approach them with some, say, pinch of salt. In the case of this guide, the I found the prices for accomodation + occassionally sights quite inaccurate (i.e. almost always higher) - I went to India in September 2008. Another thing I found slightly irritating was the language. The vocabulary was much more high-brow and, frankly, showy and exalted (too many superlatives, too many adjectives, etc.), than in the other guides I've used (Turkey, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia); my friends found it difficult ... If you think that history books you read at your school in India were a bit boring you must read this book! John Keay has condensed more than 2000 years of the complex and intricate history of the subcontinent into a few hundred very interesting pages.

Yet a lot of intense research has gone into this book and that will make you rethink and question the assumptions you took for granted. Did the Aryans really sweep through the mountains and push the Indus valley people south, or was it a gradual process of assimilation? How did the religion of the Vedas gradually morph into the complex, diverse Hinduism we know today?

In 300 pages the historian Michael Wood gallops us through the history of India. He charts the rise of immense cities in 4000 bc, all the way through to the rise of India as an emerging, 21st century global power. It is, of necessity incomplete. To cover in detail everything he outlines would take volumes.

This is a companion piece to the BBC tv series of the same name and in my opinion this book should be used as a guide and a reminder to the series in order to get the best out of it. The visual delights of the series and Wood's compelling narrative work so wonderfully that the book can only really be a pale imitation, fascinating though it is.

An absolute treasure of a book, especially bought for the School Library. A very visual book covering landscape, history, people, culture and religion, architecture and the exploration of the whole country, including a worthwhile survival guide. The text is quite comprehensive, seemingly not following the usual DK model, but still very accessible. An already popular book for those older students interested in other cultures.

Way back in the 70s I was lucky enough to spend 29 days in India. So that's why this book appealed to me. Like the cover the content is amusing and if you read the book in public you may find that people move away from you because most pages will cause your lips to break into a smile. Some people find that disturbing.

The author has travelled extensively in India and has amassed more than a backpack of hints, tips and essential advice which were screaming to be shared with more than a handful of travellers.
