I am another one of those people whose life has changed completely due to this book. I look at food and health very differently than I did before. Granted, it could have been any low-carb diet because it's the low-carb lifestyle in general that has won me over. But if it wasn't for the witty true-to-life writing style of this book, I would probably still be yoyo-ing on low calorie diets! Thank you India and Neris, I lost tons of weight, I am happier and healthier and I have learned so much about food and on top of all that, I've become a cook! Always thought I hated cooking but now I enjoy it!

If you have already unsuccessfully tried every other diet, please give this a chance. It may seem drastic at first but you get used to it ... Read More:

Got bored on atkins.all too eggy somehow. This is different. The recipies are delicious. I have cooked 22 of them in the last month and they are lovely. The whole family has enjoyed them and it has got me enthusiastic and cooking again. The almond cake is great, onion bhajias the best i ever made and the thai meatballs are fab. I feel terrific and not deprived at all, on the contrary I feel I am eating better than ever before. the main problem is deciding what to cook next,(chilli bake I think!).

and the best guide I've come across for India. Packed with detail and a reasonable cultural/ historical introduction. Maps are great, the timetables are pretty accurate, the opening times and prices are correct...

There are some very bad LP guides out there. Vietnam springs to mind. But LP India has been consistently good throughout the years. I think I've used 4 versions of the guidebook and have been pleased with the improvements everytime.

Obviously the negativities are that it is pretty big but how else are you supposed to cram in all that information.

I really, really wanted to like this book. Arundhati Roy's prose is beautiful in places with a light, comic touch in others but the bittiness of the story overwhelmed me in the end and I found myself flicking through passages in the second half of the book to get to the end. It didn't help that nearly all the main (adult) characters were so flawed as to be alienating. There was too much dark and not enough light. For a book that weaves from narrator to narrator, back and forth to a painful climax in seamless fashion read Jon MacGregor's If No-one Speaks of Remarkable Things.

Despite the inferior quality of the photo reproduction I've always thought that Rough Guide is better value than Lonely Planet. It is generally more informative, more erudite, and the style is arguably geared to a wider readership, while LP leans more towards backpackers and gap-year students. I also think LP is more prone to hyperbole while Rough Guide is normally unflinchingly honest about places. It's perceived negativity is for me a bonus as it is often better to travel with lower or at least realistic expectations. As it says in the opening gambit, many travellers head for India expecting to 'encounter a timeless ascetic wonderland and are surprised to find one of the most materialistic societies on the planet'. As me and a friend are planning a round the world trip this series of books has been a great help.
In picking places where to go it's helpful to know whats there!
Were mainly backpacking and using hostels so specific country guides aimed at this was essential. We needed to know campsites, country entry requirements, cost of living, activities, etiquette, transport options, do's and don'ts and most importantly what the food was like! As well as info on touring in campervans, car or footslogging.
The book has it all and more. It covers all such topics and then reviews each place in the country individually. It has topics on law, car rental and purchase, gay and lesbians interests and so much more. If your travelling to this country then this book will be very ... Read More:

I'd bought my flight tickets, travel insurance and the all important Visa for entering India. Next on the list was the guide book. It was a choice of this one or the Rough Guide.

Both were published around the same time, and I've used both before for different countries, so I'm happy with their layout and content. However, choosing the right guide this time seemed far more difficult.

Both contained detailed information about the places I plan to visit. However, I found some bits were present in one book, but not the other, and vice-versa. In the end I decided to go for both books. I'm travelling in South India for 3 months, so I thought it would be worth the luxury of having two guides.

This collection of short stories is a fairly insipid group of overly-similar tales, which neither present an interesting snapshot, nor constitute mini-stories in themselves. As such, it is a disappointment.

First, the good news. Lahiri has a gentle, fairly soft literary style which doesn't grate, and sits fairly easily on the page. It is not going to offend. Neither will it excite, outrage, drive you to drink or euphoria, agitate, or thrill. It simply sits there, like wallpaper.

This is a wondeful book. Having just started down the route of self-relisation with my own Guru he recommended this book to me. This book has helped bring God closer to my life. It is something I will read again and again. I am certainly not of an age where God has become important to me because of "that time of life". This book has opened my eyes and given me the strength to go forward with what my heart (and I now realise God) want me to do with my life. Yogananda stands beside you whilst you read it. I cannot recommend it enough.
