Sir Dudley Carleton. In 1614, when in exile in England, he wrote The Fruit, Herbs and Vegetables of Italy in an attempt to persuade people to eat a wider variety of fruit and vegetables. Castelvetro was horrified by the vast quantities of meat and sweet things that the British consumed, though he admitted that they helped to keep out the cold. By describing the gastronomic delights of his beloved Italy he hoped to convince his readers of the benefits to be obtained from the cultivation and preparation of new and unfamiliar plants. These are biscuits you may find in an italian patissceria shop, they are good for dessets at the end of a meal, and also good with a big mug of cappuccino or espresso when friends come round for a good gossip. The book is well written and the illustrations in colour are eyecatching and attractive to look at making the text easier to read. I like this book better than others about Sicilian cookery - because its written by several individuals from different backgrounds, each adding their own perspectives - likes and dislikes, with the writers making you feel as if you are there, sharing the experience. This book inspired me to seek-out authentic ingredients - including wonderful buccatini pasta (better than spaghetti) and brilliant olive oils which I now know how to use to best effect. So far I've tried 15 recipes and all have come-out restaurant quality - my favourites being the caponata (sweet & sour aubergine), ...
