. The Classic 1000 Italian Recipes
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Christina Gabrielli
March 30, 2002
This recipe book is a superb addition to anyone's culinary library - clearly not every recipe will suit every person but it is inconceivable that you would not find a significant number of useful recipes in here and even if you found just one nugget, then considering the price, it would be well worth it.
The variety of recipes in any of the 1000 series is simply staggering - to say you are stuck for choice is an understatement - but this particular one includes a great many vegetarian dishes too.
Ok, so there are no photographs but against that, the books don't cost a fortune either and they are compact.
You really cannot go wrong with any of these recipe books and when you consider they cost little more ... Read More:

. Italian Food
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Elizabeth David
June 25, 1998
What I found most interesting about this book was not so much the recipes, but more what it revealed about the conditions and attitudes to food of the post-war years, when this was first published. So much has changed, partly thanks to Elizabeth David herself - thank God we no longer have to use Primula as a substitute for mascarpone, as she grudgingly suggests! And I cannot imagine a time when pasta was a speciality to be tracked down in a couple of London shops.
If you're used to the more verbose, food-porn style of Nigella and Jamie Oliver, the recipes here may seem a bit spare - an ounce of this, two ounces of that, and fry. However, this format means that she can pack a lot into this little book. I don't think I've ever attempted one ... Read More:

. River Cafe Two Easy
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Rose Gray, Ruth Rogers

This is a book about ingredients rather than cooking. If you buy your oil from Carluccios and your antipasta from the deli counter at Fortnums then anyone you cook for will enjoy the food. Also, a lot of butter and oil is used in the recipes and in one particular recipe, using dried mushrooms, I had to quarter the amount of melted butter used lest I have a coronary on the spot (the result, however, was still divine). However, there are some excellent things in here that make it worth buying and some of the pasta recipes are very simple to make and prepare and are delicious. The spagetti with fillet steak is awesome and the porcini mushroom penne is TO DIE FOR and I really mean that - but cut out that butter. Some of the deserts are well worth making as ... Read More:

. Eating Up Italy: Voyages on a Vespa
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Matthew Fort
June 20, 2005
Matthew Fort's epic scooter ride up the thigh-boot of Italy is a truly delicious read. Every aspect of the fascinating and varied Italian life he encountered is amusingly reflected upon in his lightly erudite prose. I thought his acknowledgement of feeling homesick (unlike Thesiger et al) was particularly endearing and the description of his amateurish Vespa riding in Naples most entertaining.Mr Fort was the restaurant critic for The Guardian, a foodie professional, but the gusto with which he describes the various meals he was presented with en route shows a boyish enthusiast peeping through the culinary afficionado. The recipes, which are added to each chapter-ending, are splendidly simple but totally mouthwatering. What Mr Fort has managed to do is deftly mix an ... Read More:

. River Cafe Cookbook Green

I love this cookbook! It is not a cookbook that you would whip out on a weekday - although it is a mix of really easy dishes and more time consuming and advanced ones. Because of the latter I would probably not recommend it to a beginner. Some of its recipes have definitely become regulars with us.
We love the 'seasonal' approach & the recipes are all a treat to those who like Flavour with a capital F. What I mean by that is that most recipes taste like the basic ingredients/vegetables, and not like a mix of tons of ingredients (if that makes sense). What I also mean by that is that it also provokes you to taste something you may not have come up with yourself (within the Italian kitchen realm), such as a lemon salad... which isn't as sour as it sounds. ...
