. Rome Eyewitness Travel Guide
Search: Italy
from: Dorling Kindersley Publishers Ltd
February 01, 2007
I bought this book a few weeks before going on a 10 day holiday to rome and found it incredibly helpful. As well as giving lots of information on the more popular attractions such as st peters and the colosseum, there is an extensive amount of information on the lesser known, but equally as impressive sights.
As well as showing rome area by area, the Rome at a Glance section is brilliant as it gives a short list of the top attractions, then goes on to list the best churches, fountains, museums, etc.
Altogether a brilliant book to have with you whatever your doing and wherever you are in rome.

. CRIMINI: The Bitter Lemon Book of Italian Crime Fiction
Search: Italy
by: Giancarlo De Cataldo
January 10, 2008
Italian crime fiction has been gaining a higher profile in the English-reading world in the last five years, and this anthology (originally published in Italy in 2005) showcases all the big names (except Giancarlo Carofiglio), plus a few who've yet to previously appear in English. In his introduction, editor and contributor Giancarlo De Cataldo identifies three themes that unite the nine stories: corruption (financial and moral), foreigners (recent waves of immigrants), and obsession with success and fame. The first of these is rather obvious -- pretty much all crime fiction involves moral corruption. The second theme is rather more interesting and distinctive, although the stories here tend to incorporate immigrants from elsewhere in Europe, and ... Read More:

. Ripe for the Picking
Search: Italy
by: Annie Hawes
April 03, 2003
Read this book whilst on holiday in Liguria - quite appropriate considering this is the subject of this outstanding novel by Annie Hawes. It tells the tale of an English woman who has relocated to a little cottage in the hills above Diano Marina, just along the coast from Imperia, in the charmingly un-exploited region of Liguria, Italy. Superbly written, very funny and, as I can personally attest, and accurate portrayal of Ligurian life. This is one of the 'happiest' books I've read in a long time. Thoroughly recommended.

. Axel Munthe: The Road to San Michele
Search: Italy
by: Bengt Jangfeldt
February 28, 2008
The green Michelin guides are a classic reference, but I'm not an unconditional fan. This guide is nearly 300-pages long and covers everything you might need to make your visit a success. I bought this guide not so much for the regions or famous cities, but for the occasional visit to a small place like Parma, Como or Trento. I lived in Italy for some years, and I speak Italian, and there are far better Italian guides out there when visiting Florence or Rome. So this guide is useful, but not more than that.
