I'm slightly biased with the review for this book....as part of what was written could be the story of my family. My grandfather emigrated to Scotland from Italy in the 1910's and it is natural that the story struck a cord deep down. The journey begins in 1913 when one of the Crolla's - Alfonso decides to emigrate to Edinburgh with his young wife and finishes after the Second World War. It recounts of the difficulties they encountered both in peace time and duting the war, of how they conquered them to make a better life for themselves and of the beginnings of the famous delicatessen Valvona and Crolla in Edinburgh.

I have found this book to be a constant source of inspiration for my attempts liven up the boring bolognese and have used the spicy prawns with pasta on numerous occasions to great effect.

Many of the recipes do, however, require a little more than rudimentary cooking skill, a well stocked cupboard and often a little detective work to track down an obscure ingredient or a suitable alternative. The results of perseverance are worthwhile though.

We found this guide very useful for our visit to southern Sardinia. As ever, with Rough Guides, there was a good variety of material - covering the obscure as well as better-known sites. Only quibble was that quite a few opening times seemed to be incorrect - we also had the DK Eyewitness Guide with us, and on balance we found their opening times more accurate, although we found the Rough Guide text more informative with (slightly) better maps. Having both books covered all angles.

In Italy, I have often cast a pitying eye on the uninspired faces of people in large tour groups. You have, no doubt, seen them yourself, as they mindlessly follow a leader who is holding some ridiculous object aloft on a stick and frequently supplying dubious anecdotal information selected to entertain rather than enlighten. Anyone in such a group with a zeal to know more about the scenic, historical, architectural, and artistic miracle that the world calls Italy would do well to obtain a copy of one of Morton’s books on Italy. But bring along a copy of a traditional guide as well, since Morton’s books will not direct you to the best hotels, restaurants, and places to shop; rather, they tend to be journals of travel experiences ... The copy of this delightful book I bought for a friends wedding anniversary arrived today, and i immediateately fell in love with both the book and the glorious recipes contained within ~ both simple & exciting, & all which make the most of the freshish of ingrediants, or the beautifully preserved tomatoes & mushrooms, or the grated truffles evocative of this simple cuisine.(Needless to say I have already ordered my own copy!)
