Ditch all those boring guide books and take this little gem with you. It will take you to all those hidden restaurants that only the locals seem to know about and point out the details that make any historic city fascinating ( and that you might otherwise miss)
There are some out of date entries however ( like the english langauge cinema in Trastevere) so do what I did - have a map marked up with interesting restaurants, gelaterias and cafes and then hop from one to the other as you pass the major sights!

. Via Ferratas of the Italian Dolomites: Southern, Brenta and Lake Garda v. 2: Southern Dolomites, Brenta and Lake Garda Area: Southern, Brenta and Lake Garda v. 2 (Cicerone Mountain Walking)

First and foremost it needs to be acknowledged that this appears to be the only (current) English language guidebook covering this area. As such, if you are a mono-linguistic English speaker who wants to buy a guidebook to help you identify where to seek out your via ferrata thrills, then stop reading this review and buy the book! I bought this book prior to my first trip to the Dolomites after it was acknowledged in the UK magazine "Trail". The centre area covered is approx 90 mins car drive from Verona/ Brescia and perhaps 2 hours from Milan (opposite direction) so easily accessible from the UK by scheduled and "low cost" airlines. The book offers good route guidance and technical grading. The route topo's could ... Read More:

. The Monster of Florence
Search: Italy
by: Douglas J. Preston, Mario Spezi
June 10, 2008
For many people and certainly not just Italians, Florence is the centre of Italy. It brought us the Renaissance, the powerful landed families who created commerce so widely and, of course, it brought the now familiar Italian language.
Deep in its beautiful countryside, it also brought us the Monster of Florence, a serial killer on the loose since the sixties and the multiple killer of at least 16 young people.
The two authors were intrigued enough to try to investigate each murder and to learn the identity of the killer. That they, too, like several other local men, finished up in prison accused of - more or less - being the Monstro or, at worst, aiding and abetting him whilst hindering the investigation, shows only too well ... . Desiring Italy
Search: Italy
by: Susan Cahill
September 01, 1998
"Desiring Italy" became my inseparable travelling companion across Italy, after I found it by chance at a Roman bookstore. Not only it suggests special places to visit that are not always listed in traditional guides, it also makes them alive through their portrayal by literary masters (all women) that add their elegance, their sensitivity, their intelligence to that of the readers'. An added bonus was that I got to make their literary works real in my mind by following the steps of the characters in these magnificent settings (as Dorothea in "Middlemarch", for example).
