This book was published in 1944 in Italy and in English in 1946. It covers events the author claimed to have observed in 1941-43, presented in seemingly random order, while he served as a war correspondent for a major Italian newspaper, accompanying the German army on the Eastern Front.

Malaparte (1898-1957) was an early member of the Fascist Party in Italy. A man of letters without political influence, he was expelled in the early 1930s and spent some years in internal exile. Between 1938 and 1943, he was arrested several times and imprisoned briefly in Rome. This is a marvellous book, The only guide you'll ever need.
Everywhere in Milan worth going to, staying at or seeing is in here and anywhere that isn't, isn't.
The photography is excellent, the writing is sublime.
You don't have to bother going to Milan anymore, just get this book instead.

Have just returned from a 5 day trip in Rome, using this little guide as one of the books used whilst there. It was very helpful, although it's quite tiny it was packed full of useful information, with good pictures, descriptions and advice. Although the maps only focus more on the centre of Rome they were adequate for our needs 4 days out of 5, as good as the map handed to us by our hotel.
