. Mussolini and Fascist Italy (Lancaster Pamphlets)
Search: Italy
by: Martin Blinkhorn
August 25, 2006
A compelling read. Basically this is a beautifully written potted history of "Il Duce," from small violent child to big violent fascist. Intelligent, mesmerising, gifted, a vicious rapist and serial womaniser, but the right man at the right time. All of these things - from peasant to leader in ten years - the world's original fascist who never quite dropped his socialist roots, and due to his ability to change direction more than once in a single day, eventually stood for nothing. Seriously, this wasn't a man ever tied by ideology, he had none. He was everything to everyone, then eventually nothing to anyone. The ultimate opportunist, when you read this you'll understand why there was only ever likely to be one outcome. This ... Read More:

. Conquest: The Roman Invasion of Britain
Search: Italy
by: John Peddie
July 21, 2005
Until I recently sat an Archaeology A level, I gave only a passing thought about the Roman period other than dates and the physical remains they left behind. 'Conquest' certainly brings the age to life. The descriptions of the conditions endured by the natives and the Roman soldiers are nothing less than vivid. As the book unfolds, it illustrates how close the Roman army came to not invading at all. Not only does the book cover written accounts or simply hypothesise, Mr Peddie, a former soldier, goes all out to prove how the Roman war machine functioned, going so far as to demonstrate how long it would have taken to build roads from the Kent coast to London, using a combination of equations and a team of willing ... . Forza Italia: The Fall and Rise of Italian Football
Search: Italy
by: Paddy Agnew
August 02, 2007
This book is not primarily a history of Italian football but the personal reflections of journalist Paddy Agnew on his years (22, approximately) covering the sport in Italy. Indeed, it is semi-autobiographical with stories of his early days in the country (chapter one) and a non-football chapter on the village of Trevignano (ch. 5), where he lives. Therefore the book has the advantages of observation from within, as Agnew, for example, experienced the political climate under former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (the title is the same as the name of Berlusconi's Political party). Inevitably, the time period covered is mid-80s (when Agnew arrived) to the present. There is a short and interesting history chapter entitled "Mussolini Invents Serie A" (ch. 2) before the book ...
