. Venice Sketchbook (Sketchbook Series)
Search: Italy
from: St. Martin's Press
2004-11
I've owned both the surfing guides to Europe (Stormrider and footprint guide) as well as the Stormrider World guides....The new Stormrider Guide Europe the continent raises the bar again - Stormrider is always the best looking of the surf guides with the most detailed info. The new European guide has new and proper usable maps and great info in a format that is much easier to use than the footprint guides. There's great chapters on the Med coasts, Germany, Denmark, Holland and Belgium which are not covered in my footprint guide. A must buy for anyone taking a surf trip in Europe. If you're heading outside Europe check out their World guides vol 1 and 2.

. Lives of the Artists: a Selection v. 2: A Selection v. 2 (Classics)
Search: Italy
by: Giorgio Vasari
August 27, 1987
This is a long, long book with a great deal of information. Clocking in at over five hundred pages and covering about thirty artists of the Italian Renaissance, it is fairly comprehensive and detailed.
Some of Vasari's 'facts' have been discredited over the years and so the reader should not take everything here as gospel and indeed should be using this as a supplementary text with other material to get the best use out of it. Nevertheless it remains an important contemporary text and one of the first books on 'art history' ever produced.
I have to admit that I found it extremely hard going. There are great long lists of works and their subjects and the patrons of artists which it is easy to get bored or confused by ... Read More:

. The Changing Status of the Artist (Art & Its Histories)
Search: Italy
by: E Barker
January 04, 1999
This book was read by me in 2003, many years after the sad event it coversbut its impact is none the worse for that. If anything given subsequentevents in Italy after Moro's death, Sciascia was proven to have written avery insightful book into Italian political morals over the post waryears. Sciascia is an Italian politician and writer whose coverage of Italy'spolitical problems has made him many friends and enemies across the yearsit seems (witness the tragic impact he inadvertently had by criticisingthe anti-Mafia judges as covered in Alex Stille's great book "ExcellentCadavers"). This book is based on his involvement as a member of the Italianparliamentary committee which investigated the Moro Affair after itstragic outcome. He firstly ... Read More:

. The Siege of Malta 1565: Translated from the Spanish Edition of 1568 (First Person Singular)
Search: Italy
by: Francisco Balbi di Correggio
May 19, 2005
This is a first hand account of the seige of Malta by an ordinary knight who lived through it. As such, it tells the story in a clear, immediate, plain but lively manner. It was something of a publishing success at the time when it was written, and has always remained popular, both as a good read, and as a reliable historical account. The translator, Ernle Bradford, or an editor, has added just enough background comments to the text, to give a modern reader enough information to fill in what would have been common knowledge to readers at the time.
There might be better texts for a modern reader to get an overview of the political and diplomatic causes and consequences of the seige of Malta, but this will give you perhaps the best and most ... Read More:
