This book clearly explains the resorgimento and movement for Italian unification. There are a small number of primary sources at the end of the book which allow you to read first hand accounts of the fight for unity. There is some in depth analysis of the period up to the European Revolutions of 1848/49, however, it is post 1849 that the book contains the most information. Throughout the book there are reminders about the cause and consequences of each of the events that led to unification. The period before 1848 is covered, although this is concise and if you are studying this period in depth further material would be required. Recognizing, of course, the different periodization, what Christopher Hibbert achieved for the general reader in his 'Florence: Biography of a City', John Najemy has achieved, in this major work, for the serious student of Italian history. However, this scholarly textbook will find direction beyond the academic community, it will also appeal to a wider audience. I agree with the prediction made by Carol Lansing, that this work will become a classic, especially as a grounding for specialization. The accumulation of detail is impressive but the narrative easily communicates understanding, through the complexity of events, and also, themes are skillfully interwoven with the chronology. This book will serve students of modern Italy very well. Its judgements are reliable, and it has useful diagrams summarising key arguments. Perhaps it could have found room to say a bit more about the interaction between the monarchs and political leaders of the period (rarely positive for the national interest), the enduring disaffection in the south, and Mussolini's increasing lack of grip over events in the later years of his rule.

This book has a really nice feel about it. You really get the sense the auther REALLY loves pizza.

The first part is the story of his jornery finding the best pizza in italy and america. As a brit I have to say I found the italian section really interesting but lost intrest soon after he starts his search in america which is two thirds of the first part. But that is just me I would rather know about true Italian pizza that which pizza shop in new york does the best pizza.

The second half of the book goes into great detail about making dough and has about 8 (off the top of my head)diffrent recipes. One thing I did find is he talks about a neo-neoplian pizza which you have to read the first part of the book to know what he is talking ... Read More:
