I just couldn't put it down until I finished reading this book. This book deals with wide-ranging, complicated issues on linguistics in the plainest English. Well done. It has inspired me, who know little about linguistics, to look further into specific topics that interest me most. If you feel like knowing what's the language all about but don't know where to start, this book is definitely your best choice.

This is a book of grand pretensions and equally grand narratives. It brings forth equally grand expletives. It is written as if the theoretical problems with the idea of the auteur, grand narratives, identity, otherness, the ego, Freud and Jung had never existed. It has a latent Christianity (at least a latent religiosity), homophobia and puritanism which, in this post-modern, liberal age seems disturbingly Victorian, transparently prejudiced and disqualifies the author from making the kinds of universalising claims that he makes about certain texts. Don't we live in an age of pluralism where simple binary distinctions such as 'light and dark' don't necessarily apply to people, stories, places and events? After seeing the good reviews above I feel somewhat guilty about writing a less than glowing one. One of the main purposes of a dictionary is to fill in the gaps in vocabulary. However this dictionary has failed me on several occasions. Try to find the word 'discombobulate' and you will fail miserably. This is not the most obscure word in the English language and if I can't find a word I don't know what's the point in the dictionary?

I found Branston and Stafford's Media and Students Book, extremely helpful to me in my first year of studying media studies.
Quoting several different scholars and theorists, to back up some well thought out and well explained ideas behind media.
It was an excellent stepping stone for me and a platform to read more advanced media books, as this one was the foundation or the ground floor of media books, it covers the basics of media.
Overall a good read and highly reccommended.

I couldn't do languages at school, wasn't bad at other things, but with languages I always had a kind of block in the brain. But having a partner and his family who spoke French made me try to learn as an adult, and this has truly helped me. I'm not going to tell you that I'm suddenly fluent, but listening to this CD made me realise that I could do it. I learnt the whole CD after several listenings and felt a real achivement, and it spurred me on to learn more (I went onto Michel Thomas who is great). I'm actually enjoying language learning now which I didn't before, and it was because this CD made French accessible to me, if not providing a huge range of vocab. You could go straight to Michel Thomas from nothing, but this did a great job of giving me a little ... Read More:

This is a real fruitcake of a reference, packed with advice on modern English usage straight form the superanbundent British National Corpus. Within minutes of receiving the book, I found myself consulting its copious references; I now keep it by my side all the time.

An excellent source of modern usage: wouldn't dream of being without it now. Recommended.

I bought this last week and it's brilliant - I've just ordered the second volume. It totally suits my way of learning and is very easy to use. it does work rapidly and is much more pleasnt to listen to than those dreadful CD's with mock conversations in them. i'm really enjoying using it. HIghly effective - would recommend! :)
