I bought this book on the basis of the review by another Amazon reader. He sounded like he was doing what I wanted to do - acquire reading skills. And he is right - this is an excellent reader. There's a wide range of stories and the translations on the opposite page are excellent. There is also an extensive vocabulary at the back and questions so you don't need a dictionary with you. There are brief introductions to each author, in English. It is excellent value for money and the language is sufficiently difficult to challenge anyone with reasonable skills in French but not so difficult as to make the task impossible. This dictionary is very good value for money, and fine for most purposes, but I have found its vocabulary limited when working with some very mildly technical areas. Also if you don't have a basic knowledge of Italian, it isn't a lot of help with word endings etc. - there is a list of regular and irregular verbs in the back, but this is very concise and of limited help. For example, if you know no Italian, and look up the word 'vieni' you won't find it, and you don't know that you need to look under 'venire'.
I guess most users will probably have some basic Italian, and would find this a useful and adequate, lightweight and small paperback dictionary. For anyone with no Italian and/or a need for moderately specialist or technical vocabulary, I would ... Read More:

Being a beginner in Italian I have bought other books which are difficult to get in to. However this book is excellent and the cassettes which accompany them are fantastic. They give you the chance to repeat what is said in dialogues and are very good.

Before buying this book you need to ask yourself just one question. What are my language goals? If you want to pass a GSCE exam or have something to use for reference on holiday, then you can buy a much cheaper, smaller and lighter dictionary that will do the trick just fine. However, if you want to be an advanced Spanish learner, then you'll need a substantial dictionary, and this is the best I've come across, having tried several previous dictionaries of varying sizes.

One problem I have had in the past with dictionaries is the lack of words. This has over 300,000 words and thus realistically covers all the words that even an advanced learner would ever need. Also, there are interesting pages about SMS abbreviations in Spanish and how to navigate ... Read More:

I just couldn't put it down until I finished reading this book. This book deals with wide-ranging, complicated issues on linguistics in the plainest English. Well done. It has inspired me, who know little about linguistics, to look further into specific topics that interest me most. If you feel like knowing what's the language all about but don't know where to start, this book is definitely your best choice.

I bought the CD as part of the Contatti Italian to teach a class. I speak Italian fluently, and even then found the layout confusing. The CD is not divided into the various sub-sections so one cannot FF or RW except between chapters and one therefore wastes much time waiting for the right sub-section to be played. I would therefore NOT recommend it to anyone unless the CD is remastered to allow stop/start in between each sub-section.

This book is both entertaining and instructive.Written in an easy, informal style, it certainly has added many more every-day French words to my vocabulary. I can't wait to try out some of the terms & expressions on my next trip to France! The small size also makes it very handy to slip into the door pocket, or a large bag. Worth buying.
