I am enjoying this book and finding it very helpful, but think it would be pretty scary for a complete beginner to start with. Often the reader is required to give opposites of words which are not in the text being studied, and often there are words which need to be understood in order to answer the questions, but there is no translation given. I think this is frustrating for the reader. Surely the point of a graded reader is that the student doesn't have to keep reaching for a dictionary, thus breaking the flow of the reading and learning? I am managing by ignoring the words I don't know in order to keep the flow going, as I imagine I'll pick them up at some other stage along the way. Not having learnt french since school (GCSE/GCE) I found the stories easy enough to get the general story line but complex enough to challenge and revise my knowledge of the language - and extend it. The parallel text is just fantastic you don't lose interest constantly having to look words up in a dictionary. Would strongly recomend this book for intermediates.

It is rare to encounter such a well considered and helpful reference work. The thesaurus is based on the work of Peter Roget's original 1852 manuscript and is structured by six classes of word meanings which are later cross referenced in the index. This arrangement is useful for exploring ideas and is a great pleasure to use. The 150th Anniversary Edition includes new modern vocabulary and several interesting essays explaining the history, purpose and ideas behind the book. This item comes highly recommended as an excellent desk reference.

As an absolute beginner I found this phrasebook perfect and made me far more confident in my attempts to speak Greek.

The book's layout not only looks good but is logical and easy to use. Words are broken up phonetically making them relatively easy to pronounce.

All eventualities appear to be catered for.Even if you don't intend to use it, the section on romance will provide some laughs as you read some of the phrases that are included.

For those more adventurous there is even a section on grammar which is worth a read.

In my opinion the best Greek phrasebook on the market

For anyone new to teaching, this book offers a solid grounding in general teaching practise, but generally a little less than one might wish on TEFL. However there are nuggets of useful information, and the book is far more reasonably priced than other guides - as such, it is very good value for money.

I would strongly recommend this for anyone new to teaching, or returning to teaching after a break/moving to teaching adults from teaching children. The book is divided into logical and helpful sections, beginning with generic teaching skills and moving through subject specific areas such as teaching grammar, pronunciation, speaking and listening and writing.

As a foreigner preparing myself for the IELTS test I found this book extremely chaotic and unhelpful. The key and supporting CD are very poor as they do not cover the whole material that's in the book. Each module contains tasks or examples with no answers in the key provided at the end. The explanations are incoherent and not putted together at the beginning of each module. You need to hunt for essential information as they are all over the chapter. It is a challenge to make a sense of 'tasks' and 'targets' for each chapter. As a former student of English literature and language I have never came across worst text-book than this one. I will definitely return it and get another one.

I have seen several books on egyptian heiroglyphs and I have to say this is the best one for beginners by far. Collier takes the reader step by step through the maze which is ancient egyptian language. It explains how to tell which order to read them, how to decipher with relation to context as well as many excercises after each chapter to ensure you can put into practice what you have learnt. For anyone looking to learn this is the book for you!
