I use this book in my work as an English as a second language teacher. It is one of several books I use.

Basically it is a set of grammar rules along with exercises. I find it valuable as it helps students to learn basic English language concepts. There are concise summaries of different parts of the language (e.g. prepositions, verbs, plurals, etc.) students can read. These are followed by exercises students can use to practice what they've read. For this, it is one of the best I've found (and I've spent a lot of hours in bookstores looking over material).

The book is clear and concise. I learnt a lot, and the content is clearly applicable to more than English. But probably the crowning touch is that Mr. Cutts managed to write a book that is quite funny to read. Anybody having to write occasionally should have a copy.

I completed the various Michel Thomas Spanish courses and it is only natural to compare the vocabulary courses of his various "disciples" (in this case Dr Rose Lee Hayden) with those.

As a preliminary point, this is both difficult and uinfair because the courses teach fundamentally different things: MT taught grammar and very little vocabulary. Indeed, he taught vocabulary only to the extent that it was necessary to teach the structure of the language. This course aims to teach, frankly, as many different words as possible in 6 hours, with the result that grammar practice is cursory and it is necessary to do the course at least three times if you wish to internalise every word. A well-written & well-organized book. Provides answers for many question that rise up as you learn the language. The examples are really useful in order to understand plus the pronunciation is marked on the words.
This is a nice book which you can easily carry in your bag; however small it is, it contains so many things that you wonder how they do fit in there.
I would highly recommend it.

This book proved to be a lifesaver for me. It is extremely well set out, and sub-divided for ease of use. It includes sections that cover areas you are likely to come across on a day-to-day basis such as 'greetings', 'at the market', 'at the post office' and 'emergencies', to name but a few. But as well as useful phrases, it also gives a summary of the chapter explaining in more detail the way of life. For example, before the section on shopping, there is a paragraph covering the art of bartering, and before the 'eating out' section, Moroccan hospitality is explained so the reader is in the know when he arrives at the restaurant or the guest's house. I have just a few weeks to pick up some Spanish, and have bought a CD method (Language Now), and a grammar (Complete Spanish Grammar, Nissenberg). I wanted to complete the package with a dictionary I could carry in a handbag, despite some scepticism about the usefulness of such tiny things. I have been very pleasantly surprised by this Collins version - little dictionaries have made some progress in recent years evidently. This is everything that the product description says, with much much more than just word-for-word translations, and includes elements of much larger dictionaries: words in context, warnings about false friends, and longer entries for what they call 'keywords' (palavras claves!) I found this book both informative and easy to read. The ideas were well presented and give you the meat and two veg of comedy. The more critical reviewers are looking for something else possibly a personal comedy writer this book will not deliver that; you still need to do the ground work your self. The one criticism I would have with this book would be the over use of play on words which never make great humour. But for the basics of humour writing it hits the spot.

This is a real fruitcake of a reference, packed with advice on modern English usage straight form the superanbundent British National Corpus. Within minutes of receiving the book, I found myself consulting its copious references; I now keep it by my side all the time.

An excellent source of modern usage: wouldn't dream of being without it now. Recommended.

I bought a copy of this book on recommendation from one of my collegues on the PGCE course and I'm in the midst of reading it. I'm finding it hard to put down and I've not skipped any pages so far! It will even challenge what you or experienced teachers might think of as 'good practice'. There is a real emphasis here on creative approaches to teaching along side analytical ones, ensuring that students see the point of learning and have a need to find out more.

This book offers some very useful advice on English teaching from Shakespeare and poetry to planning and classroom management. It also has some nifty little ideas for approaching texts and engaging students.
