OK, so learning French grammar isn't fun! This book however was ideal for me, because along with the grammar itself there are a lot of workbook exercises, which is the only way to really lean - by practicing. Would receommend for those who already have a little understanding of french grammar but want to refresh and practice.

My own preference in learning a new skill is invariably to attempt it without the aid of specialised tuition. I find that a less regimented and structured approach suits my style of learning. In fact I doubt whether I would have encountered this book if I had merely ploughed my way through a recommended textbook. Like the other reviewers I strongly recommend this work both to novices and also the more advanced. The author amusingly warns against some of the potential colloquial pitfalls that belie those innocent conversational exchanges. This is a very good introduction to the subject but with a particular emphasis on the Beowulf poem. The subsequent influence of the poem is also considered which I found very interesting. The comparison to Tolkien's work is appropriate as Tolkien was Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford and as regards Beowulf the most learned man of his day.

Brought this book after having a particularly bad experience in a mock exam. So glad I did, condenses everything down into manageable chunks and cuts the rubbish out which some guides have. The result in getting this was two As on the exam modules at AS and improved grades in the following year. Hopefully this will help me to success later on in the year!

It's difficult to find good Spanish authors suitable for beginners. The idea behind this book is good. Short stories with the Spanish text translated on the opposite page. This makes it easy to progress through the story without losing too much momentum. The translations are quite good.
I found the stories a bit boring. It appears that in an effort to find reputable authors of good literature, the editors sacrificed more potentially interesting stories with actual events. The stories are often long-winded and slow with no great drama. They didn't maintain my interest beyond an exercise in grammar and vocabulary building. Written in a sloppy and thoughtless style. E.g. On page 5 the learner is introduced to two sentences: 'Seals love to play' and 'Bats are mammals.'
This is redolent of the infamous nineteenth-century travellers' guide which offered 'My postillion has been struck by lightning' as a useful phrase to memorise.
It is also full of careless mistakes e.g. on page 8 we are taught that 'a sinistra' means 'on the right.'

Perhaps I just don't learn this way. The music did nothing for me, and I can't think of any phrases "anchored into my long term memory". Perhaps I don't play it enough.

The CD is fine if you want to learn stock phrases like "I would like to order...", "Have you got..." "Is there...." but what do you do when someone responds in German.

I want to learn German so I can ask, understand the answer and respond. It will help you "get by" but not to have a conversation - go for broke and get Michel Thomas instead.
