Written in a sloppy and thoughtless style. E.g. On page 5 the learner is introduced to two sentences: 'Seals love to play' and 'Bats are mammals.'
This is redolent of the infamous nineteenth-century travellers' guide which offered 'My postillion has been struck by lightning' as a useful phrase to memorise.
It is also full of careless mistakes e.g. on page 8 we are taught that 'a sinistra' means 'on the right.'
Pulp it!

I found this book particularly good; it is written in a very clear and succint way and highlights the everyday's mistakes that students (but not only) are falling foul.

Some people say that spelling and grammar are not the most important factors when writing academic papers, essays, dissertations, reports, projects and so forth....

Ok....tutors looks mainly for your understanding of the course material. But he/she won't be at all impress if you use the apostrophe incorrectly or if you repeatedly making gross grammar mistakes.

That is why I think that, as a foreign student studying in English, this book has been a great help in improving and polishing my writing skills.

Contains straightforward (bordering on boring) photocopiable worksheets. Of the three sheets, the first is a list of up to 16 words in large type, the second is a basic "worksheet" containing minimal exercises.
The last is a list of the same words with two spare colums for "write/cover/check"

It simply regurgitates the NLS spelling bank words with little added value and minimal discussion/explanation of the "rules" behind spelling.

Having previously used Jolly Grammar 2 for spelling at KS1, I was disappointed with the worksheets.

Whilst aimed at students, this book will prove indispensable to anyone who wishes to improve their writing. All the standard topics are covered, such as punctuation and grammar. But, the authors also provide excellent advice on matters such as writing clearly, essay structure and common errors.

Most books of this type are dull and boring to read. 'Write it Right' is a cut above the rest; the authors have created a superbly useful book that will fuel the reader's desire to enhance their writing.

OK, so learning French grammar isn't fun! This book however was ideal for me, because along with the grammar itself there are a lot of workbook exercises, which is the only way to really lean - by practicing. Would receommend for those who already have a little understanding of french grammar but want to refresh and practice.

This is a very good introduction to the subject but with a particular emphasis on the Beowulf poem. The subsequent influence of the poem is also considered which I found very interesting. The comparison to Tolkien's work is appropriate as Tolkien was Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford and as regards Beowulf the most learned man of his day.

My own preference in learning a new skill is invariably to attempt it without the aid of specialised tuition. I find that a less regimented and structured approach suits my style of learning. In fact I doubt whether I would have encountered this book if I had merely ploughed my way through a recommended textbook. Like the other reviewers I strongly recommend this work both to novices and also the more advanced. The author amusingly warns against some of the potential colloquial pitfalls that belie those innocent conversational exchanges.
