This is a brilliant little book covering a vast array of subjects in great detail, but nowhere does it give any help on pronunciation, which could make the user less understandable in practice. Some hints or tips on pronunciation at the beginning, or pronunciations in phonetics would take this little book from fab to phenomenal!

Having a copy of the King James Bible and copy of the William Tyndale version of the New Testament, I was very interested to find out where the English language as we know it came from.

This book did not dissappoint me. It took me right from the Anglo Saxon and Norse of the six century, which made up Old English, right through to the Modern English that we all speak today and how it is spoken in the former colonies of the British Empire. It is very well written and very informative. I enjoyed a great deal the chapters about the influence of French on our language under William the Conquerer, and how increased trade in the Middle Ages and William Shakespeare helped turn the Middle English of William Tyndale into the Early Modern ... For anyone new to teaching, this book offers a solid grounding in general teaching practise, but generally a little less than one might wish on TEFL. However there are nuggets of useful information, and the book is far more reasonably priced than other guides - as such, it is very good value for money.

I would strongly recommend this for anyone new to teaching, or returning to teaching after a break/moving to teaching adults from teaching children. The book is divided into logical and helpful sections, beginning with generic teaching skills and moving through subject specific areas such as teaching grammar, pronunciation, speaking and listening and writing.

The title should be why not Catch 18, as it is made clear that that was the number chosen by Heller as a title up until the publisher with deeper thinking and subtlty gave us the title which became a well known (and according to Heller) misused phrase. That is one of the high points of this ragtag colllection of titular explanantions. One should ask: Why not Lord of the Hobbits? or Catcher in the Maize? These books however, are not included. What is her eis only that which has a story behind it. At least a partly verifiable story.

I am a mature student studying for the Scottish Higher exam. I have found it difficult to find material that stretches my abilities, the majority of courses always start at the beginning again. This is a very good continuation course, I didn't work through the first book so I am not sure how good a starter course it is but certainly the second is very good for someone with an understanding of the basics that wants to improve listening and comprehension skills. The CDs that accompany and exercises in the book are also quite interesting in their own right, unusual for foreign language courses! The book on its own is quite good but to get the most out of it you need the CDs. It doesn't work too well as a reference book, you do need to go through the activities.

As a mature Uni student studying french again for the first time in 20 years I found this book useful, informative and relevant.
Each section covers a different topic that can be relevant for you whether just visiting or living in France and provides excellent vocabulary lists and grammar exercises to get those french brain cells working again!

Most people aren't crazy about this book but have to buy it because it is required- in other words, people buy this book because they have to use the format and style it discusses in order to write and submit a paper. Other than that, I don't know who else would go out of their way to buy this thing. It's thick and not thumb indexed the best. Other psychological books readers may benefit from include The Sixty-Second Motivator.
