It's difficult to find good Spanish authors suitable for beginners. The idea behind this book is good. Short stories with the Spanish text translated on the opposite page. This makes it easy to progress through the story without losing too much momentum. The translations are quite good.
I found the stories a bit boring. It appears that in an effort to find reputable authors of good literature, the editors sacrificed more potentially interesting stories with actual events. The stories are often long-winded and slow with no great drama. They didn't maintain my interest beyond an exercise in grammar and vocabulary building. There are many style manuals available, and many different styles from which to choose (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.). For those who are involved in social science and medical research, often the APA style (American Psychological Association) is a required format, and expected.

This is not my favourite format for several reasons, not the least of which is because the footnote/endnote notations do not include first names of authors (a big minus in my estimation). However, the system is a tried-and-true one, and one that shows little sign of decreasing in popularity among its adherents.

That being said, this manual is not for the basic student or author. It does include sections on grammar and usage, but these are meant to be refreshers ... Read More:

I'm in my 1st year of a teaching degree and I found this book the most helpful and easy to read of those suggested to us. It gives you so many ideas, especially on how to diagnose different childrens problems with reading and practical suggestions on how to deal with them. I think it would come in useful to both trainee teachers and those already in practice as it is so much easier to read than most other texts on the subject. The accompanying book 'Writing Under Control' is just as helpful.

The first half of this book was quite useful in that it highlights problems with back skipping and other basic reading "problems".

What let this book down for me was the shameless self promotion of his Mind Mapping which he has trademarked.

I did not a book about Mind Mapping (or spider diagrams, to use its non-trademarked name) and therefore don't want to be cross-sold further mind mapping material

The claims about super-high speeds have not yet proved attainable and I have serious doubts about their attainability

That said I have improved my reading speeds as I was particulary slow

Perhaps I just don't learn this way. The music did nothing for me, and I can't think of any phrases "anchored into my long term memory". Perhaps I don't play it enough.

The CD is fine if you want to learn stock phrases like "I would like to order...", "Have you got..." "Is there...." but what do you do when someone responds in German.

I want to learn German so I can ask, understand the answer and respond. It will help you "get by" but not to have a conversation - go for broke and get Michel Thomas instead.
