I used Rediscover Grammar back in 1999 as a first point of entry into the subject before I trained for a stint as an ELT teacher. Clear and concise, it opened my eyes to the world of grammar and quickly got me to grips with it. I have browsed through many books on grammar since, but I still think this is best. Whatsmore, 12 years on from publication, the presentation still looks fresh.

After reading many reviews - I chose this course and I certainly made the right choice. I have loaded the CDs onto my Mpeg 3 player and listen to them every morning on my way to work. As a complete novice to Italian, I now feel really confident about ordering wine and a meal (obviously the most important requirements). Easy to listen to and learn with no need to constantly refer to the book - although I carry the book with me and consult it when necessary. All in all, excellent!

This is the book recommended by most teachers. I used it before I went to live in Japan. However the way it is set out and the language taught is too formal and rigid.

By far a better choice for the learner is the Genki series which is far better written and includes a lot of less formal expressions useful for every day conversation. FOr a more serious learner minna no nihongo is also far superior to Japanese for busy people.

Overall I would avoid this book like the plague and spend your money more wisely. If you have a lazy teacher then but this book.

The big hardback thesauri are too big, and the mini or Gem thesauri are too small for your needs. Then look no further than The Oxford Paperback Thesauarus (OPT). According to the introductory blurb, it is an abridgement of the New Oxford Thesaurus of English published in 2000. In fact it is 95% of said New Oxford Thesaurus of English. Having downloaded the pdf file with a sample of the larger thesaurus and compared it to this OPT, I was amazed. For a fraction of the price you do indeed get an average of 95% of the content!
The layout is good: headwords are in a bold sans-serif font and the synonyms are in a (for some maybe a little too small) serif font. The different senses of the words are clearly numbered and in general each sense begins ... Read More:

Jeremy Harmer has been prominent in the EFL industry for many years. This latest version of his classic 'The Practice of English Language Teaching' is very informative and full of all the neccessary aspects of the EFL industry. It also includes comments on some very modern methods and techniques, such as DOGME EFL, interactive whiteboards and cuisinere rods.

Harmer is very easy to read and is not heavy like some of the earlier English language writers. The DVD is a welcome edition, and though it really doesn't offer anything new it is still enlightening to watch other teachers teach in a real-life classroom situation.

I liked this book. It is written with Bryson's usual witty and engaging style. It is a book that is absolutely of the high standard any reader of Bryson's previous books will have come to expect.

Having said that, this book is certainly not for everyone, even if you have thoroughly enjoyed many of Bryson's previous offerings. I have an amateur's interest in language and this book provided me with an informative introduction to its history and quirky nature. If you are not interested in the subject I think you will probably find this book very dull indeed.

I am currently doing a intermediate level of italian but find it always useful to remember the key verbs. I have used a lot of italian books in order to understand italian and this one explains and does what it says ''drills'' those verbs into your mind with a good set of exercises. A well organized easy to understand book perfect for beginners of Italian! I would seriously recommend it.

An excellent book. Large pages and print and well laid out. It takes you through the basics of grammer whilst you learn the vocabulary. The vocabulary is laid out in sensible subject groups. There are masses of fairly straightforward exercises and this proves the theory that "Practice makes Perfect". A small point is that some of the questions are American "biased" and we Brits may not know the answers.
I would suggest that students start with this book before moving onto others in the series.
You can't learn a new language without the effort.
