Going abroad? May be to France or England - but you do not know any French, is that it? Well now your worries are all over with this book: The Collins French Dictionary! Now, it is in colour so it is even better and easier to use! Also, it has a phrasefinder to make it a lot simpler for travellers. Half of this book is French to English and the remaining half is the other way around! So you can be French and go to England or vice versa. It was ever so useful when I went to Paris! Can someone tell me if this book has accents to show where the stress falls on a word? I have used "Oxford Take Off in Russian", which does have these accents, and found it very good, if a bit thin. So I bought another book Basic "Russian: A Grammar and Workbook", but the lack of accents renders it virtually useless for self-study.

This is a clear and easy to use phrase book. The way it is laid out (with colour coded pages) makes it extremely easy to find relevant phrases when you really need them, without too much flicking through the pages. It's size makes it perfect to slip into your pocket and the mini dictionary in the back is also extremely useful. Most phrase books tend to be much the same and have the same phrases within, but the size and layout of this one makes it stand out enough from the rest to warrant a closer look. You can usually find it for a great price on amazon as well.

This has to be the best learning tool ANYONE can use when attempting to learn Hiragana. I have just started to learn Japanese and felt it important to learn both Hiragana and Katakana. Over the past week I have been using this for about an hour a day and have already attained near fluency in Hiragana.....PAINLESSLY!
Seriously I have just worked through each page and am astounded with the results! I felt it would take months of dilligent study to remember the "countless" Hiragana, but the brilliantly structured approach and clever excercises made it SO easy I just had to share my feelings. While only half way thorough the book I was SO impressed I decided to purchase both the "Let's Learn Katakana" and "Let's Learn Kanji" from the same series.

A generally well organised primer for those planning to take French to a serious level. The book is well laid out and the explainations are for the most part very clear.

There are one or two errors in the book (for example in the list of impersonal clauses that take the subjunctive - I hasten to add that my native French speaking teacher identified these, not me), but not significant enough to devalue it. The cross referencing is a little patchy in places and some of the exercises on the dry side, but then since when was grammar supposed to be fun!

The section on verb usage is mostly excellent but the section on pronouns would benefit from expansion and clearer examples. Overall though, a very good buy.

I have just moved to Germany and did a standard CD course from the local library in the UK (BBC?). It gave me some basics that got me through a few months of being here. I could ask for some coffee and count but it did not give me a foundation on which to build.
I felt that I took a bit of a risk in buying MIchel Thomas because it seems expensive but I am so glad that i did. I have been using the CDs in half term and have managed to get thought half the course without having to repeat anything. I can also practice it straight away and have been praised on my german already!! It is easy to look up words in the dictionary and place them in the correct part of the sentence. I think that the locals here respect the fact that you are being polite.

I bought this last week and it's brilliant - I've just ordered the second volume. It totally suits my way of learning and is very easy to use. it does work rapidly and is much more pleasnt to listen to than those dreadful CD's with mock conversations in them. i'm really enjoying using it. HIghly effective - would recommend! :)

This book follows all features of the makings of a good maze; you choose an entry and follow it. Then, you make a choice of what sub-route to follow. This procedure is repeated over and over again until you end up in a room that is a pool of hundreds of words, where you forget what led you here in the first place while you are drowning. This is not a tool, this deserves a whole subject of study itself.
