This book proved to be a lifesaver for me. It is extremely well set out, and sub-divided for ease of use. It includes sections that cover areas you are likely to come across on a day-to-day basis such as 'greetings', 'at the market', 'at the post office' and 'emergencies', to name but a few. But as well as useful phrases, it also gives a summary of the chapter explaining in more detail the way of life. For example, before the section on shopping, there is a paragraph covering the art of bartering, and before the 'eating out' section, Moroccan hospitality is explained so the reader is in the know when he arrives at the restaurant or the guest's house. Yes it isn't an update to the original Harts, so on that basis it loses a star due to OUP's re-use of the brand for something new.

Judging the book on its own merits, it is concise, clear, compact and reasonably authoritative. I would also say it goes wider than some style guides and looks at overall composition of a book (not all of which would be relevant to an author).

It also covers a very broad range of written material as you would expect from OUP, including mathematics, indexing, tables, captions and so forth.

Having had a lot of exposure to composition this is I would say written from the write point of view - I just need to find an second hand copy to satisfy my nostalgia for the original!

Whoever dreamed up the idea of turning the tired old guidebook format on its head like this should be congratulated.

Want a single volume that explains French culture, history, regional quirks, pride and resentments, manners and well just about everything in a single accessible volume? It doesn't sound possible but this book pulls it off with real panache. I couldn't find a dull page.

Also well worth a mention are some delightful and often very witty illustrations and cartoons throughout.

before I started to read this book I only though that Katakana was used for words borrow for other countries. so with that in mind I was quite shock to find out how wrong I actually was. it is use for many more things then you would expect like names on animals and plantes. I would recomment though that you at least know Hiragana before you read this one, to get a more easy way to understand it, and it has all what you need to know like it's sisterbook "Let's learn Hiragana"

The French word for bread is "pain" not "pan" - the method may work but if the information being taught is inaccurate this is not a useful tool.

Well, I do own this, and the mistake is in the review, not the product.

The back of the box actually says:

The french for bread is pain. (PAHn)
Imagine putting loaves of bread in a pan.

(Because, although spelt pain, it is not pronounced pain).

This is indeed a good method of learning vocabulary.

This dictionary is a set text for my 3rd-level OU Latin course, but in my opinion it is not up to the normal OUP standard. Although edited by James Morwood, it seems to be the insensitive abridgement of a much larger work. Although the basic vocabulary is probably adequate, there are not enough phrases/idioms present, esp. on the English-Latin side. On the plus side, the print format is very clear, and the grammar section is quite good.

May suit some, but if you're really serious about the finer details, look elsewhere.

This is a little book of 25 Spanish crossword puzzles. Maybe puzzle isn't quite the right word here as each puzzle only consists of around six words! Still, it's only easy if you know all the words. You're likely to pick up some useful vocabulary even if you are an intermediate student as I could only manage to finish two puzzles unaided out of the 25. There's a list of the 150 Spanish words used at the back of the book and the solutions. I used to do a puzzle each day and found it sort of amusing. If you get bored with the puzzles, then you can always colour in the pictorial clues. Plus it's dirt cheap. Recommended.

OK, so learning French grammar isn't fun! This book however was ideal for me, because along with the grammar itself there are a lot of workbook exercises, which is the only way to really lean - by practicing. Would receommend for those who already have a little understanding of french grammar but want to refresh and practice.
