. Michel Thomas Advanced Course: French (Michel Thomas Series)
City Travel Guides > Books > Languages
by: Michel Thomas
November 01, 2005
I agree with the majority of the reviewers below. the common complaint is that this is not advanced? Well that is arguably the case but if you have a basic understanding of French and you want to take youreself into the A level (which incidentally stands for advanced) then I recommend this set. The fact that I took A level French many years ago and this set clarifies tenses better than any teacher I have experienced says it all- and now I am relatively comfortable with 19 YES 19 tenses after this course (even the subjunctive!!).
I would also add that his advice at the end of the cd is priceless I just wish he managed to produce a further course. And he has got rid of the dithering student from the introductory course which was frustrating. ... Read More:

. AQA AS Philosophy: Student's Book (AQA AS Level): Student's Book (AQA AS Level): Student's Book (Aqa As Level)
City Travel Guides > Books > Languages
by: Martin Butler, David Rawlinson
June 26, 2008
The AQA endorsed text book for the new AS Philosophy specification is, quite frankly, a disappointment. Much has been made of Nelson Thornes' partnership with AQA in producing new resources for their AS and A2 specifications, especially given the senior examiners that have worked on it.
Unlike the alternative Philosophy in Focus AS textbook, this does include all of the 10 themes across the two units. However, the book lacks the detail and clarity that characterise the aforementioned alternative book. Key terms and concepts aren't always explained, the implications of examples from philosophers aren't always drawn out and some of the chapters are frustrating in their layout, jumping backwards and forwards between related concepts, rather than ... . Oxford Beginner's Japanese Dictionary
City Travel Guides > Books > Languages
from: OUP Oxford
September 07, 2006
Oxford beginner's Japanese dictionary is pretty good on the whole for the aspiring student of Japanese, but is by no means perfect.
On the plus side, all of the Japanese is in kana (you *need* to know kana if you ever want to learn the language properly), and the most useful/common kanji are given next to each translation. The selection of words matches the needs of a beginner well, meaning that you don't have to trawl through endless pages of useless vocabulary to find what you want. There are also grammatical examples to accompany some of the translations; however, some of these are quite advanced, and since a literal translation is not provided they aren't quite as useful as they could be.
There is a useful grammar section in the middle, which ... Read More:
