This book contains the usual Lonely Planet attributes of glaring ommissions, inaccuracies, strange recommendations and howling errors. And then there's the endless padding out of accommodation/restaurant listings to make up the weight. It feels like it has been rushed together, even though it's the third edition.
However, there is still quite a lot of useful information that you may not necessairly find out elsewhere - the trouble is, you don't know if those bits are the accurate ones until you find out for yourself.

A fabulous LP guide to a fabulous country. Thorough, accurate and honest reviews of everything and anything. AND, unlike other lonely planets, there is a wicked sense of humour and healthy cynicism. These guys dont take themselves too seriously!! Highly recommended.

I've bought more than 5 types of Bali guide books in advance of our 3 week to Bali trip, and this is the one I am taking with. The book is small enough to fit in your handbag and has more than enough information to keep you in the know, without bogging you down with too much detail. Maps are easily accessed, nice pictures, good quality paper and great top tips.

This book was invaluable when travelling in East Africa. The layout is easy to understand and it has basic country history, language and local information, as well as information about East Africa in general.
There is not as much detain in the single East Africa book as in each individual country book, and although this was in some ways irritating it was useful when making last minute travel plans. Guide books are not widely available in east Africa, but it was easy to change plans to suit our requirements with the book covering the whole area.
I would recommend a more specialised book for exploring one country in more depth, or to accompany this one.

We got this book before we went on a two week holiday to Goa and found the book to be excellent and extreemly helpful. As we had not been to Goa before, it gave us an idea of what to expect and which places to go to and what to see.

Because of this book we were able to plan what we wanted to see and managed to fit into our two week holiday a trip to Arambol staying in a coco hut on the beach, spice plantation @ Ponda, Fort Aguda, Dhudsagar Waterfalls, Old Goa, Anjuna market, Ingos Night Bazzar, Bondla Eco Tourism Park, boat trip to monkey beach - and we still had time to relax and soke up the sun!

I took this book with me when I visited Russia for the first time with absolutely zero knowledge of Russian. This book was invaluable! Due to the nature of the Russian language, being one that is spelt as it is spoken, I was using words and phrases from this book and being mistaken for a local! The problem was I could not understand the responses I got many times, but that is not a fault of the book.

The book also lists words and phrases in Cyrillic, which means it's extremely easy to learn to read in Russia and I was able to read nearly all of the Cyrllic alphabet within the day!

Well, having returned from a two week tour of Sardinia, we feel rather let down by this lonely planet. This book provides some good historical information about the island, however it feels rather repetitive throughout and the space could be better used to provide travelers with the information that would improve their stay. Sardinia has some magnificent inland and coastal sights, towns, and places to stay, but the lonely planet took us to some areas of Sardinia which when we arrived, we sat wondering why the resort had been listed. We also found some absolute gems which were only mentioned in passing and had we not been willing to venture off the beaten track we would have missed them.

A good country guide. Jordan is a small country which has many sights to see, the book is not very comprehensive and only provides details of sights in a brief format, which suits me as I don't like to be have every detail thrown at me.

As with all lonely Planet guides, this book is much more aimed at backpackers giving all the transport and budget details you'll need. I found a few details were significantly out of date and resulted in expensive taxi rides and some confused looks from the locals. Check the lonely planet website for updates.

If you are deciding whether to get the Rough Guide or the Lonely Planet (I used both for my trip) then you need to decide what you need to know. The rough Guide is very good at giving you lots ... Read More:

I just got back from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Gomera and this is a brilliant guide book - really good info on transport, acommodation and my word the restaurant reccomendations were the best Notably La Cazuela in santa Cruz and El Palmar at Valle Gran Rey on La Gomera ( in my view a much nicer place than the shanty town under construction feel of San Sebastian).Highly reccomended.

This is currently by default both the best overall guide to Indonesia for independent travellers, and the only one that is remotely up to date.
The competition (Moon, Footprint, Rough Guides) seems to have given up covering this vast archipelago years ago. For this reason alone, the book still gets 4 stars from me, despite some shortcomings and amusingly striking errors outlined later.
It definitely covers enough attractions to keep people occupied for months, and is more than enough for those with an average interest in the country.
As usual with this series, it covers practical details like prices, public transport and city maps, though unusually for Lonely Planet, many prices in this book (especially for public transport and guiding services) ... Read More:
