. Finland (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

For me Lonely Planet books do exactly what they say on the tin, and for the kind of holidays I like going on, I'll pretty much always make sure that I'm taking the relevant Lonely Planet with me.
This Finland book is no exception, and helped us find some great places to stay and to eat, many of which we wouldn't have otherwise found out about. We pretty much always agreed with the brief comments in each review as well.
There's a worthwhile 50 pages introducing Finnish history and culture at the beginning and the rest of the book is sensibly organised, starting with Helsinki and the South and working up to Lapland towards the back of the book.
I know this sounds more like an advert than a review but we couldn't ... Read More:

. Austria (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

For a book that specifically states in its opening pages that it is NOT aimed at people wishing to take professional photographs, but at travellers who want to improve their holiday snaps, the advice contained in the subsequent chapters rather misses the point.
For a start, there is a large section devoted to film photography, and I would hazard that a VERY small minority of casual photographers now use a film camera (and I'm sure this was the trend even back in late 2004, when this book was published). Really the majority of people who still use film are at least intermediate, if not professional.
The introduction observes that travel photographers must be able to take pictures in varied light and weather: "The continuing ... Read More:

As usual the lonely planet West Africa is full of details, which enable a traveller to travel around West Africa, ranging from the best hotels in small towns to bus schedules. From the fertile coast to the sandy deserts it provides a good but brief overview of the nature, history and present sights. The only weak point is the limited amount of information on regional cultural differences or history, which is probably caused by the number of countries covered

. Las Vegas (Lonely Planet City Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

I am a big fan of Lonely planet books and have plenty of them on my selves. But this was probably the worst one that I have from them. I found that there was not really enough information about what to do, see and find in all of the casinos and that there was too much information which I personally found unuseful and unhelpful.
The best part of the book was the history of Vegas, which I found very interesting.
I would actually say that if you are going to Vegas that you probably don't even need such a book. There is so much in all of the Casinos that after 4 days we did not see no where near all of the free things, let along the other things which you can pay to see (the dolphins in the Mirage for example). And there is also plenty more ... Read More:

. Rajasthan, Delhi and Agra (Lonely Planet Regional Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

I am heading off to the India next month to travelling from Mumbai up to Delhi and Rajasthan and thus was looking for a good guide book! I've had the Lonely Planet - India guide for several weeks and it appears excellent and concise and is highly recommended by everyone I speak to. I was also looking for a more specific regional and city guide and thus when I saw this book I thought it would be ideal! However, when it arrived it is simply just the Rajasthan, Delhi and Agra pages lifted from the Lonely Planet - India book! Therefore if you own that, this book is of no use!!
At the same time I ordered the Lonely Planet "Best of Mumbai" and it appears to be an excellent, colourful guide with useful maps. By chance this week I popped into a book shop and found ... Read More:

. Madrid (Lonely Planet City Guide)

I liked this book and read it before setting off for Madrid. It has a lot of information in it and gives some useful historical detail. I found it a bit difficult to use when out and about as all of the info is sectioned by barrios (districts) and as a first time visitor to Madrid it all seemed a bit confusing. I used it together with the eyewitness top 10 madrid guide and found that using them both gave me an excellent balance of info and detail to get about and see everything.
