. Cuba (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Brendan Sainsbury
November 01, 2006
For my first trip to Cuba, this book was pretty accurate, up to date and informative in terms of places to visit, tourist attractions, what to do and where to go. It gives you useful advice on how much you are expected to tip, what to expect of the country and how to get around and where to go which was very useful. The only negative aspect of this book was probably the design layout. It covers a vast majority of aspects of Cuba which can be a lot to get through, the layout is quite difficult to read and its mostly black and white columns of writing do not make it appealing. As it is written from first hand experience it is definitely a very useful book for first time traveller's however a lot of the entertainment they had suggested for Havana, ... Read More:

. Brazilian Portuguese (Lonely Planet Phrasebook)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Marcia Monje de Castro
January 01, 2008
At first sight, a useful book despite a dictionary at the back that contains some glaring omissions of basic words such as 'from' and 'please', as well as other useful words such as 'sting'. Its culinary reader is threadbare too, with plenty of omissions - annoying when tried to decipher a menu.
But the real flaw is in the phonetic spellings of the Portuguese words. The author uses 'ng' to indicate the nasal vowels that characterise Brazilian Portuguese, but this only works about half the time. The rest of the time you're just mispronouncing the word.
The biggest omission of all, though, is as follows. In Brazilian Portuguese, when a 't' is followed by an 'e' or an 'i', this means the 't' is pronounced like the 'j' in ... Read More:

. Portugal (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Robert Landon

I bought this Lonely Planet guide as I was moving to Portugal for a year. I have used previous guides by Lonely Planet but this was has been my favourite: the authors are fantastic: their humour, insider tips and just general description of a place are about 99% correct.
This guide makes Portugal seem much bigger than most people believe it to be. The authors research many places outside of the "usual suspects" and provide rarely-heard of information.
The only sections of this guide that are, one expects to be off, such as transport prices. And even though they can be substantially off, I cannot hold this against the writers, seeing that Lisbon metro and carris changed their prices twice in a year. Also, I cannot give this ... Read More:

. Peru (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

Whenever I go traveling I always take a Lonely Planet with me, they are indispensable and Peru was no exception. While the book served me well and ensured my travels where well informed and trouble free.
But!, I feel the book is not up to lonely planets usual standard, the whole book was pitched at a too negative tone, it had me thinking I would be raped/mugged/attacked every 5 mins, to the contrary I felt entirely safe for all the time I was there. Many of the prices where incorrect despite the books recent publish date, I also found the descriptions of many of the hotels to be wrong, it seemed as if they had been randomly shuffled in editing.

. Greek (Lonely Planet Phrasebook)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

As an absolute beginner I found this phrasebook perfect and made me far more confident in my attempts to speak Greek.
The book's layout not only looks good but is logical and easy to use. Words are broken up phonetically making them relatively easy to pronounce.
All eventualities appear to be catered for.Even if you don't intend to use it, the section on romance will provide some laughs as you read some of the phrases that are included.
For those more adventurous there is even a section on grammar which is worth a read.
In my opinion the best Greek phrasebook on the market

. Malta and Gozo (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Carolyn Bain
April 01, 2007
I wonder where LP will set its own limit on the destinations they cover. Being excellent and nr.1 in guidebooks of unexplored, less known or not well organized places, they also have written books about places like Malta (and The Canary Islands) where one can go easy on your own without a guidebook like this one.
About Malta there are numerous guidebooks with detailled descriptions of the places, and that is what people ever need to visit Malta. Most people will be there in some sort of package tour already anyway. Once there the locals speak english and the island is so well organized you do not need a LP to find out what to do, how to get around etc. The tourist office is also extremely well providing brochures, maps of everything you need before ...
