. For the Sins of My Father: A Mafia Killer, His Son, and the Legacy of a Mob Life
City Travel Guides > Books > Mafia and Organised Crime
by: Albert Demeo
2003-09
I bought this book on the spur of the moment. It was in the sale and I thought, "What the heck, I've nothing else to read tonight!"
The author Albert DeMeo pulls no punches as he chronicles not only his father's life, the Mobster Roy DeMeo and his steady rise to power in the Mafia in New York but also his own involvement from the tender age of five in a world that was seductively charming as it was dangerous. "For the Sins of my Father" is a brutal, candid, violent, tender portrayal of a life in a huge glass bubble in which escape is not an option for anyone.
However Albert DeMeo is not an apologist for his father's actions, rather he pulls the reader in a world in which corruption is at the heart of everything. Just ... Read More:

. East End Gangland
City Travel Guides > Books > Mafia and Organised Crime
by: James Morton
October 05, 2000
You will hear the throaty roar and feel the vigration of a good road machine as you cruise past these pages about a real life leader of the pack. The motorcycle club subculture has been an important theme in Hollywood (from The Wild One to Easy Rider) and in recordings (the song, Leader of the Pack). Everyone who sees the Hell's Angels has an opinion about what is going on, yet few have had a first hand relationship with a member. This book gives you a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like for Oakland's leader of the pack, one of the first branches of the Hell's Angels. I grew up in San Bernardino (Berdoo in the book) which was an even earlier branch of the Hell's Angels than was Oakland's group. Some people I went to high ... Read More:

. The Soho Don: Gangland's Greatest Untold Story
City Travel Guides > Books > Mafia and Organised Crime
by: Michael Connor
September 18, 2003
To tell you the truth I hadnt heard a lot about Billy Howard before purchasing the book so I was looking forward to reading it as I have a huge interest in British crime. Once I started reading it however, I was very diappointed to find that the author chose to write the book in a very difficult and distant manner, not at all ever really decribing the man or his operations in great detail, leaving me to wonder very much what it was Howard became famous (or infamous) for. The book came across as more of a romantic type of storytellling in a period where Soho was the seedy capital of London and the man's true personality or his lifestyle never is really told by the author. For a man who was in the same league as the Krays and Richardsons etc, ... Read More:

. Scum Airways: Inside Football's Underground Economy
City Travel Guides > Books > Mafia and Organised Crime
by: John Sugden
September 26, 2002
A lot of the stuff detailed in this book would come as a shock for many part-time football supporters, and indeed, would probably sicken many others. However, for better or worse, touts are part of the game. Indeed, in Japan and Korea, they were the most effective way of getting the tickets from the office to the fans, and if the corruption at each rung if the FIFA ladder persists, touts will always have a veyr importtant role to play. With touts, we sometimes have to pay over the odds for tickets. Without touts, we might not get our hands on them at all. Stories such as phone lines being jammed by unsrcupolous call centre employees who sell the working number to the touts would shock many people if they were more widely known. The story ... Iwas very surprised by this book, after seeing a documentary on sammy bull i decided to give this book a read, iwas glad i did, this book really lifts the lid on the inside workings of the mob as well as telling how a normal young man ends up in the mob as its most ice cold killer.A must read book if your into the mob.
