. The Chinese Opium Wars (Harvest Book; Hb 350)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mafia and Organised Crime
by: Jack Beeching
1977-04
chapter in British history? For this excellent book exposes in riveting detail Britain's shameful and pernicious Bengalese opium trade with China. Jack Beeching traces Britain's thirst for tea and her inability to pay, essentially, in anything other than opium; her maintenance of this trade through two wars advanced upon spurious pretexts encouraged, in part, by parliamentary lobbyists. Interleaved with these events the author describes, just as vividly, the tragic consequences of the Taiping insurrection signalling a further weakening of the Manchu dynasty. Altogether a fascinating read whether you are interested in either Chinese or Indian history.

. Hollywood's Celebrity Gangster: The Incredible Life and Times of Mickey Cohen
City Travel Guides > Books > Mafia and Organised Crime
by: Brad Lewis
May 15, 2007
This is a amazingly thorough researched work on the king of Los Angeles,Mickey Cohen. He was into every conceivable racket be it extortion, prostitution, protection, race fixing, wire tapping or fixing fights It involves his relationship with the Rat Pack providing them with high class broads and then blackmailing them.He had the Cops and the Attorneys in his pocket. He survived many assination attempts.
His involvement with Nixon ,The Kennedys, Jack Ruby and Marilyn Munroe and the opening up of Las Vegas are explored.
Unable to get him indited on any serious charges he eventually got put away, just like Al Capone ,on tax evasion
Its a great read and page turner.
