. The Classic Pasta Cookbook
City Travel Guides > Books > Mediterranean
by: Giuliano Hazan
1993
This is a superb book.
After a trip to Rome I was inspired to cook real Italian food and this book gave me the recipes, techniques and tips to create food that is far better than anything out of a jar.
I use this book just about every single night and it is quick, simple and very tasty.
Any left overs I take into work and everyone asks for the recipe.
This is a one in a million cook book - as equally useful for everday cooking as for a dinner party.
It is simple and no fuss - using ingredients you will have in your cupboard - absolutely brilliant!

. Seasons of Sicily
City Travel Guides > Books > Mediterranean
by: Natalia Ravida

I adore this book. I collect southern-Italian cookery books and this is a real gem - lovely homely recipes and a pretty book (with a wipe-clean cover).
Most of the ingredients are easy to source in the UK, with help from 'Seeds of Italy' I'm growing some of the more unusual vegetables on my balcony (courgette flowers etc), although I'm still searching for a mold for making marzipan sheep (a traditional easter treat) which I can't find in the UK.
The photos and text give an insight to life at the beautiful faded elegance of Villa Ravida (the writer's ancestral home - where the delicious olive oil comes from - spotted in Waitrose and worth the investment). Interesting that the author was a journalist in the UK. ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet World Food: Spain
City Travel Guides > Books > Mediterranean
by: Richard Sterling, Alison Jones
March 01, 2000
The World Food series has to be carefully priced, because although these are attractive books, like nearly all published by Lonely Planet, you don't need them. All guidebooks worth their salt give some space to the food, the markets and restaurants, and so all of these books are effectively an add-on, a luxury - this is unlikely to be the only book you buy. The Spain book in particular feels slightly unnecessary. Unlike Italy, France or India, where the cuisine is hugely developed and highly complex, the food in Spain seems consciously simple, pared-down. This is reflected in the text, which frequently meanders into long digressions about other things. Worse yet is the persistant impression that "World Food: Spain" has been translated ... Read More:

. Cooking in Spain
City Travel Guides > Books > Mediterranean
by: Janet Mendel
1997-12
My Mother bought this book about 20 years ago via the ex-pat magazine Lookout and it's been used so many times they have had to purchase a new copy. I still have the original (with foodstains included!) and according to my Father who is Spanish and was a Food and Beverage Manager for a Major International Hotel-Chain for over 20 years, this book is the best book he has ever found on the subject.
Janet Mendel has collected these recipes by travelling into the villages of Spain and asking the local women to show her what is what and how to cook it.
If you love Spanish cooking this book is indispensable. Alternatively, 1080 Recipes by Simone Ortega is also good but not as simple as this book.
