. Made in Italy: Food and Stories
City Travel Guides > Books > Mediterranean
by: Giorgio Locatelli
September 04, 2006
I bought this book on a whim whilst on holiday and now find myself reading it from cover to cover. The whole concept is to put the food and the chef in context; the book reads like no other cookery book I have come across. A whole range of ingredients are explained in short essays throughout the book (eg olives, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, parmesan etc). The recipes are split into starters, soups, risotto, fish, meat, pasta and deserts. In amongst the essays and recipes are wonderful photographs and short autobiographical vignettes from Locatelli.
I also have the excellent 'Sliver Spoon', but it is eclipsed by 'Made in Italy'. The former is a huge repository of recipes, listed in exhaustive detail. Locatelli's book on the other hand ... Read More:

. The New Spanish Table
City Travel Guides > Books > Mediterranean
by: Anya Von Bremzen
April 24, 2006
I am not a fan of hyperbole, but in this case, I believe I am justified in saying that "The New Spanish Table" is far and away the best book on Spanish cuisine. As a long-time resident of Barcelona, Spain, I am skeptical of most new entries onto the Spanish cookbook scene. I subject every book to a battery of tests, such as what their recipe for a real tortilla española is and whether they get the Spanish titles for their recipes absolutely correct. In this case, Anya Von Bremzen has outdone herself with an excellent blend of stylish, avant-garde recipes by the likes of superchef Ferran Adrià, mixed with homey, traditional recipes that form the backbone of the Spanish repertoire, such as caldo gallego and good old gazpacho.
But what makes ... Read More:

. Bitter Almonds
City Travel Guides > Books > Mediterranean
by: Mary Taylor-Simeti
September 01, 2002
This book is neither a detailed insight into a vanished way of life, nor a particularly useful resource for recipes. I may be biased because I took it on holiday and was expecting to be entertained, and found myself wondering why the biographer hadn't asked Maria's contemporaries what they remembered of the Convent and what her siblings' memories of that time were, what the villagers knew of the Convent and its inhabitants, all manner of questions were unanswered. In all, I felt the biographer just wasn't up to her job, the images weren't convincing and the recipe section could have been much better, perhaps more effort would tempt the reader to try the recipes for themselves. I don't think this is a book for a casual reader, but students of sugarcraft ... Read More:
