This book is neither a detailed insight into a vanished way of life, nor a particularly useful resource for recipes. I may be biased because I took it on holiday and was expecting to be entertained, and found myself wondering why the biographer hadn't asked Maria's contemporaries what they remembered of the Convent and what her siblings' memories of that time were, what the villagers knew of the Convent and its inhabitants, all manner of questions were unanswered. In all, I felt the biographer just wasn't up to her job, the images weren't convincing and the recipe section could have been much better, perhaps more effort would tempt the reader to try the recipes for themselves. This is a superb book.
After a trip to Rome I was inspired to cook real Italian food and this book gave me the recipes, techniques and tips to create food that is far better than anything out of a jar.
I use this book just about every single night and it is quick, simple and very tasty.
Any left overs I take into work and everyone asks for the recipe.
This is a one in a million cook book - as equally useful for everday cooking as for a dinner party.
It is simple and no fuss - using ingredients you will have in your cupboard - absolutely brilliant!

This is one of my absolute favourite cook books. I have never cooked a bad recipe from it. It is very well written and easy to cook from. Personal favourites include, tagliatelle with chicken livers and pasta with ham and peas. I was so inspired I even made my own tortellini. A must have pasta book for anyone who loves Italian food.

As the title suggests this book has a good selection of Spanish bar and restaurant cooking recipes - many of which are made up from a large assortment of paella variations but rightly so as this is what you get in tapas bars and restaurants.. The author has captured many of the basics and simplicity of some popular Spanish recipes, a good book to have in the kitchen especially for the paella enthusiast

I have lived in Italy for many years, and love Italian cooking - I love it because it exalts simplicity, it takes a few basic ingredients and produces pure uncluttered taste sensations. It puts vegetables and beans in the place they should be on a table - at the head. Antonio's recipes are absolutely genuine and simple, and reflect all of this. These dishes are exactly what you find in Italian homes - things like raw artichoke salad, turnip shoots with pasta, pumpkin risotto, pizzoccheri, I could go on and on. The layout of the book is also simple and uncluttered, with great photography and interesting and valid introduction sections to each vegetable.
