This book is an excellent introduction to italian cooking. In the front their is a brief chapter on the basics of the italian store cupboard i.e. which olive oil to use for which dish, which herbs are best dried or fresh, different types of pasta for different dishes. (Fortunately the italian store cupboard does not require tonnes of different ingredients you might never use again). The recipes seem to be authentic and everything is done as it would be in Italy. All the recipes are in four to five steps. Details are given about how many people they serve. The index is clear. The book had a durable wipe clean cover. This is the first recipe book I go to when I've been presented with a previously 'uncooked' vegetable in my lucky dip organic delivery. It hasn't failed to provide me with a tasty recipe with ingredients that are likely to already be in my pantry. Clean, tasty, no dairy substitutes (yuck!). I've never considered the lack of food photos to be an inconvenience. Well done!

I must say that among many books that write not just about roman cuisine but also about Rome and Roman way of life this one stands out! I recommend it strongly to all those interested in Roman cooking and a peek in a way that romans thought. Impressive literature list as well.
And just for the sake of being objective and honest, there is just one little things that I found to complain about. And that is that some recipes could use a bit more mediteranian touch, but on the other hand author is Northerner and de gustibus....
All in all one of the best books on subject! Must have!

This is THE guide to Naples and Campania for foodies and people who are interested in food and wine. It is a veritable encyclopaedia, with interesting details about hundreds of restaurants, food shops, wine bars and wine shops, agricultural establishments (vineyards, olive oil producers, etc). It turned a chilly week in March into a wonderful foodie holiday. It is also full of beautiful photographs.

My wife saw this book in a restaurant in Rome on a recent holiday. She was taken by the sheer beauty of the book and the wonderful recipes. I am very happy to say that upon her return she bought it (from Amazon) and we have been using it ever since. We have tried a lot of the recipes and without exception the food is brilliant. I would say that this is not a book for novice chefs but persevere - it's worth the effort. To close I would say if you only buy one Italian cook book, buy this one.

I came across this very interesting cookery book recently. I gather that it won a 'Best Cookery book on Foreign Cuisine (in English) at the Worlds Cookbook Fair recently.I have prepared over 30 recipes from this excellent book and we have enjoyed each one. Having travelled in Greece and Cyprus(Greek part) I have always enjoyed the food that is to be found outside of the cities. This is the first recipe book I have found that not only provides recipes, but superb background information on the past history of the Country. It probably takes a writer who was born outside of the Country they are researching, to give such a credible overall view of its cuisine. My household is full of eaters who are allergic to dairy products - but are Italian and love Italian food. Bugialli's book on Sardinian cooking saved the day. This book lets US-based cooks, using common (or easy to find) ingredients, create authentic Italian dishes that taste wonderful and are virtually dairy-free. The desserts section, of course, relies fairly heavily on dairy products. But the flavors provided by the main courses are so intense and clean, you can skip dessert and still be completely satisfied. Grazie, Signor Bugialli!

Hi,

Having wanted to be a great cook for ages but having lacked the necessary skill and dedication I hacked my way through a few celeb chef books without learing too much and more often than not without being too impressed by the results.

This book it completely different the recipe's are simply fantastic, my 3 favoutire recipe's not come from this book. It shows you how to quickly and simply using, often only 3 or 4 ingredients, produce simply stunning results!

Makes cooking fun and relaxing whilst producing stunning results! Simply fantastic!
