Seeing how this is the American release of this book, it seems fitting that an American Chef should review it. So, here I am.. It is nearly impossible to imagine a more complete reference book on the often over-looked and easily misunderstood subject of Regional Italian Cuisine and Culture (the two seem to go hand in hand). With two indexes (one for food references and another "general" for names and places) make this book indispensible for anyone who has an interest in anything Italian. This book, coupled with "The Food of Southern Italy" by Carlo Middione, and "Italian Food" by Elizebeth David, creates an complete library on the subject with nearly every stone turned.

This book, although full of some wonderful recipes, to me lacks the passion and love that makes a greek dish. Many of the traditional and best dishes (such as pasticio) are missing, and this book tries to make Greek food into an ala cart style food, which Greek food should never be. It's basic wholesome food made with love, not dressed up fancy as shown here

This is also one of my favourite recipe books. The recipes seem abit overwheming at first but the more I look at it, the more I discover ones to make! My favourites are lentil and chorizo stew and spinach and chickpeas. The good thing about the recipes is that although they say 'for 4 tapas' they create a large amount of food (the stew does 4-5 main meal portions and the prawn and apinach loaf was a big loaf tin's worth.(not eating it again for a while)) There are good recipes for bbqs and outdoor summer eating, as well as the hearty winter fare! There's also the sense that the next time you're in spain you can check out the tapas bars without them being out of your league!!! I've bought my salt cod for the salt ... Read More:

This book is rubbish if you want to learn anything other than Greek history of food and culture. It offers no pictures of the recipes, nor of presentation - instead showing pictures of old men smoking and the Virgin Mary. It appears to be designed for a Greek person who already has a great knowledge of Greek cooking. I see no point in the book recommending not to use British alternatives, without then explaining how to make the Greek version. I want my Money Back and will be asking. Otherwise, if you want a dust collector, I highly recommend.
