We have been long awaiting a book of sweet treats since Ursula's Cakes and Puddings sadly went out of print. This new book has exceded out expectations -not only is it choc full of wonderful puddings and cakes but also icecream (Italian ice creams need we say more-roll on summer and the opportunity to try). Our two favourites in the Books for Cooks cafe are the Farmhouse Apple Cake (has customers clamouring for more) and the Positano Chocolate and Almond cake (the addition of lemon zest to a choclate cake is original and inspired). Delicious !

I was delighted to discover this cookbook on Amazon. It was interesting to hear that it was also reviewed by a reviewer whose family hail from Cyprus, and this was one of the reasons for me purchasing it, as I like authentic cookery, and it goes without saying that this book really makes the grade. It doesn't contain lots of preambles, nor much information on Greece or the cuisine, however I found that this simple volume which was originally published in the Greek language in 1969, is a bestseller in Greece and contains 500 recipes. No colour plates, no intros, but an extensive collection of easy recipes to follow. This book is rubbish if you want to learn anything other than Greek history of food and culture. It offers no pictures of the recipes, nor of presentation - instead showing pictures of old men smoking and the Virgin Mary. It appears to be designed for a Greek person who already has a great knowledge of Greek cooking. I see no point in the book recommending not to use British alternatives, without then explaining how to make the Greek version. I want my Money Back and will be asking. Otherwise, if you want a dust collector, I highly recommend.

For those who think vegetarian equals deprivation, they need only pick up this book to find that meat is not always necessary for rich, delicious meals. Many of the recipes require only a few ingredients, and none are difficult to prepare, so this is excellent for those just beginning to cook or interested in trying out a meatless diet. Most definitely worth adding to any cookbook collection
