To understand why the River Cafe books are as they are, one must first understand Italian cooking. It has more of a regional basis than any other european country, although France comes close. They use the best of the local produce.

What Ruth and Rosie provide are regional receipes that are authentic, although somewhat restaurant-ised. If a dish requires Chianti, then it will be Tuscan in origin, if it require Barolo then it will be Piedmontese. To be critical of this, is to fail to understand Italian cooking.

This is not a book that panders to the "what can I get in the supermarket" crowd. This is not "chicken italiano" with some tomatoes and a few herbs russled up in 5 minutes.

Sometimes what seems simplest is really the best of all. Clear, beautiful writing, simple, delicious food, quiet time with those you love, the home of your soul. This book offers all of those things, and the great pleasure of reading as well. This is one of my favorite books, and I highly recommend it. Even if you've never been to Majorca.

We have been long awaiting a book of sweet treats since Ursula's Cakes and Puddings sadly went out of print. This new book has exceded out expectations -not only is it choc full of wonderful puddings and cakes but also icecream (Italian ice creams need we say more-roll on summer and the opportunity to try). Our two favourites in the Books for Cooks cafe are the Farmhouse Apple Cake (has customers clamouring for more) and the Positano Chocolate and Almond cake (the addition of lemon zest to a choclate cake is original and inspired). Delicious !

The regions covered by this book are extensive with a huge variety of styles and quality. This book is a really good overview - which would be of great assistance to anyone taking a Diploma in wine or has an interest in particularly Italian wines. The book does cover a number of producers and is well written and clear. I would recommend this book.
