The green Michelin guides are a classic reference, but I'm not an unconditional fan. This guide is over 200-pages long and covers everything you might need to make your visit a success. I bought this guide when visiting different places in Scotland, and it turned out to have just the right level of coverage and content when visiting places like Edinburgh for a few days. This is a useful guide for short visits.

Michelin's camping guide offers a pretty comprehensive overview of campsites in france. Despite being primarily in french, all the essential ingredients to picking a good spot for the night are shown in symbols, for which there is an english key. At a glance one can see the percentage of shaded pitches, the facilities on site including shop/restaurant/showers etc, facilities nearby, the price and the star rating for the campsite. There is even a special 'red star' system for those campsites michelin thinks are particularly good for a specific reason such as having beautiful views. An excellent range of guides for anyone wanting to explore France town-by-town. They list almost every town and major village alphabetically, rank them by star rating, and tell you what there is and what's worth seeing. Lots of maps and suggestions along with guides of where to eat and stay in each place. Exploring France would be much harder and less successful without them. The only minus point is that any restaurant or hotel can vary quickly with a change of staff, and a great recommendation in the guide might not always match the current reality. Otherwise, wouldn't be without them.

I used this guide on holiday in 2002. On the plus-side it did lead me to explore towns and villages that I would probably otherwise have omitted from my schedule, which would have been my loss. The information provided is detailed, and useful if you want local history. On the down-side all the information on the towns and villages is referenced alphabetically, rather than by area. So, if you want to find out about the villages around Narbonne, for example, you will need to consult a map and look up each village separately, which is obviously time consuming and not something you feel like after a nice afternoon in a village cafe!
