. Oliver Twist (Oxford World's Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Charles Dickens
July 08, 1999
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this accessible novel. Not only does Dickens take great effort to build up a nuanced plot structure and characterisations, he also uses this novel as an opportunity to launch a full scale critique against the disparities of Victorian society. By describing so persuasively the plight of Twist's character, and the decay of Victorian London, the author gains the full acceptance of the reader, and develops a sense of hope within the plot. This is a polemic study of society at its worst, and looks to the very characters in 'Oliver Twist' for some glimmer of hope. A much recommended read.

. Abu Dhabi Complete Residents' Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Explorer Publishing
June 15, 2006
When we lived in Abu Dhabi seven years ago the best current information we could find about Abu Dhabi was fifteen ill-written and inaccurate pages in a popular Middle East guide book of the time. Today we have the venerable Abu Dhabi Explorer to help us with our second residential trip to the Emirates. I have read it from cover to cover and am simply amazed by Explorer Publishing's thorough treatment of this vibrant city. If you want to know how to get a residents visa or where the best beach clubs can be found, or maybe you need to find out how to get a liquor license. It's all within this comprehensive volume of knowledge. An absolute must for anyone relocating or considering a lengthy trip to Abu Dhabi. Go on - prove me wrong!

. North Cyprus (The Bradt Travel Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Diana Darke
December 19, 2003
Despite another correspondent trying to put you off travelling to Northern Cyprus - you should go there - the people are very freindly (crime is almost 0%) no lager louts just a wonderful place to visit and this book does do the place justice. The Turkish Cypriots are wonderful people and just shrug their shoulders when asked about the Greeks - the Greeks however when asked about the Turkish Cypriots tend to rant and rage - then tell you that the North the people live in shacks have no education etc because that is the propaganda that their government is spouting.

. The 8.55 to Baghdad
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Andrew Eames
June 01, 2005
I came across this book by chance, browsing through the withdrawn books on sale in my local library. It turned out to be a very fortunate whim since this book is really very good. I was initially attracted to it because of it's Agatha Christie connection (being a fan of her). I already knew a fair amount about Agatha Christie's life (her divorce, her trip to the Middle East and subsequent encounter with Max Mallowan) when I started reading it but Andrew Eames' treatment of this period in the crime novelist's life is by far the best account of it I've read. He clearly reveals how significant the trip was as a turning point in her life. He also made it romantic and adventurous which other accounts have not tended to do.
But even if you aren't ... Read More:
