. The Ottoman Turks: An Introductory History to 1923
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Justin McCarthy
January 29, 1997
McCarthy's history deals with the inception of the Ottoman empire from the late thirteenth century to its collapse following the First World War. It deals with all the main political, religious and military issues, as well as social and cultural issues such as education and changes in family structure. It also takes a broad geographical sweep. In addition McCarthy makes generous use of maps and occasional, anecdotal use of statistical data. McCarthy is clearly unfamiliar with western or eastern history in the period he is writing. He seems unaware of the main debates concerning ... Read More:

. Yemen (Country Guides) (Country Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Daniel McLaughlin
November 10, 2007
I studied Pashto full-time for six months and went to Afghanistan in 2002. At that time the only Pashto books around in the UK were either written in the 19th century or were based on the Pashto spoken in Pakistan (where there are some 8 million speakers). Until December 2006 when this book came on the market there were still few others.
As the synopsis states, this was written for American soldiers and civilians going to Afghanistan. What I like about it is that in one section there is a picture, the Pashto script, the English translation and a good transliteration which having studied the language I can see how it works. This would suit both those who have no knowledge of the language as well as those who have studied it.

. The Lion Atlas of Bible History
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Paul Lawrence
September 22, 2006
Paul Lawrence needs to be congratulated for this excellent volume. His scholarship is accessible to the lay reader and leads you into a greater understanding of the issues that surrounded the writing of the Bible.
For years I have gone to reference books with specific questions only to be disappointed that the writers only seem to deal with questions of a "scholarly" nature that don't really touch into the real world.
This book is completely different. The graphics are excellent, the maps very helpful and the photographs (an abundance of the them) give the reader a far greater insight into the terrain and culture of the Bible lands than words alone could ever do. Having said that the text is full of good scolarship and an abundance of ... Read More:
